Question: Price of DVC Points Rental

Since joining in '94, I've only rented out points 3 times, and generally try to use up all of our points ourselves. I have noticed that there is a bit of a difference in what members are asking....$7-10+. Don't know about you, but I've held out for $10 and gotten it everytime. With the price of points for purchase going up, doesn't it make sense for members to tighten up the bottom price range? Any thoughts?

I think there are different philosophies for people who rent points, causing the difference in pricing.

Some want to get as much as they can for their points. Nothing wrong with that...would we complain about someone wanting to get as much as they can for their used car or anything else?

Others want to move their points quickly so they don't have to "mess" with the renting thing any longer than they have to.

Still others just want to get their maintainence fees covered...I think those are the $5-$6 ones you occasionally see. Those people figure that as long as they break even on maintainence, they are happy.

So my guess is that the rise in cost of points is not as much a driving factor in rental prices as the maintainence cost per point.

I don't really know...I've never rented points from either side....but that's my guess.

I think what people ask for their points depends on the time horizon involved too; points with a more distant expiration date allow more time for the owner to rent them. There is no reason to "rent cheap" if the points aren't expiring within a month or so.


I won't even respond to posts that want to rent $7 or $8 points. Even at $10, the potential rentee gets an outstanding value, perhaps with the exception of weekends and they don't really want a Friday or Saturday night and I understand that. If they want to pay value resort prices though, well, there are the All-stars through Central Reservations. I too have too many options even through the Concierge Collection to rent points too cheaply.

When renting out your points, I think you have to look at the regular season CRO cash price and go from there. When you rent out your points, you don't know what season you will be renting them in. Regular season is your best bet. You can always negotiate down, if your asking price ends up being too high. Also, If a room rate is listed as $100/night, It will really cost the vacationer paying cash $111.00 (after taxes), so you should use the tax inclusive price when figuring the overall asking price. I don't see any reason to go cheap right off the bat. $10.00-11.00 is fair, especially when you compare to the going cash rate (which keeps going up). 20% or so below the going cash rate is a good discount. I don't see why DVCers would want to rent their points out at 50% discount. You really need to view your points as cash.

We pay almost $4/pt in maintenance fees and taxes on our points. Too many renters have a "fire sale" and do a disservice to all renters. They don't understand the true value of their points. A higher price can be requested when you rent a large # of points early in their use year. I would never make a business out of renting, we did so for a DCL cash price vs the point price. We have a family of 5 and need 2 cabins. The DCL point price is a real rip off. JMHO...Johnnie

Sometimes the cheaper points are also what I called "distressed". Distressed points may be in holding status, points canceled from a Disney Collection reservation or may expire in the next couple of months. The use of those points is limited in time or location and therefor are cheaper. I have personally rented such points to go to DLP when I had plenty of my own to spend. It was *cheaper* to rent the distressed points than it would to have used my own or to pay cash.

FWIW, I have rented points to others and have always received $10 per point.

I rented out points for $9 a point but I would not have rented for any lower. I had some friends I had made a reservation for who need to go another week and the next day after they told me I saw someone post that they could not get a ressie for the same dates as the dates I had reserved for my friends. This person had rented points before and knew how DVC worked and wanted to check out the other resorts before deciding whether to purchase. We talked on the phone and she was very nice. It worked out great for both of us. We had an abundance of points this year from a resale with lots of banked points and I could have banked these points but I had promised dh I would rent a few to offset the initial purchase price. I hope I don't need to rent in the future.
