Trying to plan my first DVC vacation for June 2011 but I have a question on those extra 24 points we can purchase for $15 each. Will MS allow me to purchase those 24 points and still borrow from my next use year to complete my reservation? I don't mind paying extra since I want to leave enough points for my home resort stay.

Hope I am making sense...I am a DVC newbie :)

Should not be a problem. I had to purchase one point for a vacation. On that reservation we used current year, borrowed and points in holding. If they can handle that they can handle anything.

When you make the reservation borrow the points first that you want and then tell them you want to purchase X number of points.

One interesting thing is you have to be transferred to another department for the purchase because MS cannot take a credit card.

How much time does it take to process the credit card? A few weeks ago, I converted a reservation from an SSR grand villa (home resort) to an AKV grand villa at 9 am at the 7-month mark. Since I was in a borrow position already, I was thinking of using the one time use points for some of the difference in points rather than borrowing more, but given the usual scarcity of grand villas, I didn't want to take the risk that I might lose the room in the time that it took to charge the points.

It takes about 5 minutes. But the MS cast member stays with you. That way he or she has there finger on the reservation and you won't lose it.

You don't buy the points before making the reservation, you are doing it as they are booking the room.

Hope that makes sense.

They absolutely will allow you to do it. I did exactly that for an upcoming trip...just let the representative know what you want to do and it should be no problem.

Yes but you can only purchase extra 24 points at 7 month (or less) window

so it wouldn't be possible if you are booking during your Home Resort priority

booking window (11 mos - 7mos +1day before check in date wanted).

At 7 mos or < you can call to add additional night, etc. that would be

covered in full by purchased points or with a combination of purchased

points & your own points.

True. I forgot about that. Since I was in holding, windows weren't an issue.

If you are worried about getting your reservation I would book the nights you can now using current and borrowed points. Then at the 7 months get the remaining night(s) using any other borrowed and purchased points. It's much easier to add on.

Thanks everyone! I was just looking for this information last night on the member website (didn't find it, ran out of time). I should have known to check the DisBoards first - :thumbsup2

Does anyone know if you can purchase the 24 points when booking a cruise a year or 2 in advance or does the 7 month rule apply to cruises too?

The Disney Cruise Line is part of the Disney Collection and you can use the one time use points for that collection. Here's the information on these points on the MS website:

One-Time-Use Vacation Points

See the details on how you can purchase a minimal number of additional vacation points to use towards your stay of choice.
As a Disney Vacation Club Member, occasionally you may find yourself in need of just few extra vacation points in order to book that perfect dream vacation. Previously, this required borrowing vacation points from a future use year, but very recently a new alternative was introduced. They're called "one-time-use" vacation points and are available for a fee of $15 ($13.33 plus $1.67 tax) per vacation point. Availability of one-time-use vacation points may be limited or suspended from time to time, and the fee is subject to change.

Details:
One-time-use vacation points are vacation points available for Disney Vacation Club Members to use as an alternative to borrowing vacation points from the following use year's allotment.

You can obtain a maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year per membership.

A maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points are processed in a single transaction, not multiple transactions.

The fee for one-time-use vacation points is $15 (including tax) per vacation point, and is subject to change.

One-time-use vacation points expire according to the use year of the reservation booked and are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be banked or borrowed.

One-time-use vacation points are not available for waitlist reservations.

One-time-use vacation points cannot be applied retroactively to existing reservations.

One-time-use vacation points are only available for Members whose contract is closed and in good standing.

One-time-use vacation points are available only for Disney Vacation Club resorts, Disney Collection, Adventurer Collection and World Passport Collection reservations.

One-time-use vacation points used for Disney Vacation Club resort reservations can only be used up to 7 months prior to arrival.

One-time-use vacation points for Disney Collection, Adventurer Collection and World Passport reservations can be used according to the booking guidelines for each individual collection.
