Hi--I recently bought a Toyota Avalon and I have a few questions I hope someone can answer. I've never owned a Toyota so I don't know if this is just the way they are or if I should take it in to be looked at. First, this car is an automatic and when it is shifting down from second into first I get a little surge of power. It was suprising the first time it happened, but since I'm aware of it I've been able to compensate. Is this normal? Second, does the engine always have that buzz sound when accelerating? I'm used to the sound of my chevy engine so I was wondering if this is just a Toyota engine vs. a Chevy engine thing. Thanks.

This surge should not be happening, PERIOD!

Not sure about the buzz sound you are writing about.

We have 2 Toyota's and neither one of them do the things you describe.

No engine should surge. Toyota has a recall on 3.8 million vehicles because of stuck throttles. They originally were blaming it on the accelerator pedal getting stuck on floormats. However, ABC reported many toyota owners who have been in serious accidents because of the stuck accelerator have not had those floormats in the car. I would take your vehicle to get checked out. It is strange how many people have no idea how to handle a vehicle when a throttle is stuck.
