question for tipod users

My 2 tripods have the ability to unscew the Pan head. Underneath, on top of my tripods is a screw that sticks out to put other types of heads on it -- like a ball head. I've read that there are 2 sizes and I've heard of people ordering the wrong ball head for their tripod because the screw for the tripod didn't fit the ballhead or vice vera. It has something to do with the way it screws into the tripod. Do any of you know what the exact sizes of the screws are that I need to be aware of when purchasing a new ball head? Help? I need a ball head, but need to be aware of the correct size i need. Does that make sense?

There are two common sizes 1/4" and 3/8" (specifically 1/4-20 and 3/8-16). Many heads accept both via a threaded bushing which often comes with the head.
Check the diameter of your tripod thread, if it is 1/4" then anything will fit (with or without a bushing), if it is 3/8" the selections are more limited.
