first off, we had our twins on friday! they were a little early (34w6d) but are doing so well. only a bit of jaundice. we're getting ready to settle in to our first night home now.

my question is this. I've been on bedrest for PIH for 8 weeks. No symptoms but high bp...no protein, etc, even with multiple 24 hour urines. they did a 24 hour urine afterwards and finally found the protein...finally diagnosed with pre-e officially. Its been a few days and my bp is still high. They did try 2 meds in case they might help and both times I had a horrible reaction, so was taken off. The plan now is to hope it runs its course in the next few weeks.

has anybody gone thru this? how long until your pressure came down? did you need meds or did your body fush it out on its own?

TIA!

Well no medical advice from me........but a great big

CONGRATULATIONS!!! on the birth of your twins.

I had HELLP, which is a very very very bad form of Pre-E. I had my dd at 29 weeks. My BP never came all the way down. She's now 5 and I'm on BP med's.

If your BP is moderatly high, you're probably fine to let it "go" for a few weeks. I'm sure your dr is keeping a close eye on you. If you do need med's, there are many to choose from. You'll probably just need to keep trying to find the right one & dose that is right for you.

Good luck & feel free to PM me anytime!

CONGRATS TO YOU!!!

I too have pre-e and was on bed rest for 4 weeks, same no protein and numerous 24 hour collectrions. My DS was 5 weeks early and jaundice as well. Stayed in for 5 days and sent home.

My BP dropped to normal within a week of giving birth. I did stay on the same diet (I even ate the hospital food!) that I was using to control it as much as possible while on bedrest. I pretty much ate-no sugar or salt added stuff for about two weeks. I ate baked boneless, skinless chicken, steamed veggies, plain baked potatoe and drank a lot of water. I also took it pretty easy for about two weeks-making sure to nap and let others do stuff for me.(hard for me to do but I knew I needed to be at my prime for the baby)

Wishing you and your family all the best! Be sure to rest and take care of Mommy too!

What is your BP running? It can stay high for quite a while. WE do not always give meds if not really high. Just watch the moms pretty closely. HOw often are you going back to the dr?

COngrats on the babies!!

Take care.

Cathy

Congratulations!!!

I had the same situation as you are experiencing. They wanted to put me on hbp medication but told me I would probably have to stop nursing. I really didn't want to do that so I asked if they could please just give it a little time. My pressure came down in about 3-4 weeks if I remember correctly. My pressure did go up again with my next two pregnancies but again went down a few weeks after giving birth.

Hope all goes well for you all!!!

I was diagnosed with PE at the end of my 4th month. Bedrest for one month, hospitalized for one month, ds8 born through emergency c-section (I had gone into kidney failure) at 28 weeks. As ill as I was, my protein came down within a week, although my bp was still borderline. They kept me on bp meds. (Aldomet I believe?), but Drs. wouldn't allow me to leave the hospital until they were satisfied with my progress-- I believe I was discharged only six days after delivery. I had a checkup with my DR. several days later and I remember my bp being normal (although they kept me on meds. for a while just to make sure) and no protein. So all in all within 1 1/2 to 2 weeks urine was back to normal, and off bp meds. fairly quickly (at six week checkup I think). However, my ds was in NICU for a month (mainly for lung development, feed & grow--we knew he'd be just fine), so I did not have the stress of caring for a newborn (let alone two!) while I recovered--I'm not sure if that had any effect on my recovery or not. I don't remember how often I went back for checkups, I believe she saw me twice a week for two weeks, once a week for two weeks, then six week checkup.

Congratulations on your babies--I hope they're doing well, and that you're getting some rest! As long as your doctor is monitoring you, I'm sure things will turn out just fine. Pregnancy and PE is a big strain on your body as is the taking care of twins! Maybe you just need a little time to get back to your old self--I'm sending lots of good thoughts and wishes your way! Don't hesitate to call your with any questions or concerns!

Congratulations!!

I also had PIH...never diagnosed as pre-e thankfully. I was also put on bedrest around 32 weeks and delivered DS at 35w6d. I went back to my OB/GYN 2 weeks after I gave birth just to check my BP and it was fine. Hopefully yours will go down with time. :)

Congrats on your new babies!
I had PIH with my first two pregnancies and my BP was back in check by my 6week checkup without meds. With my 3rd I ended up with preeclampsia and had to start meds while still pregnant and continued through until about 12 weeks postpartum. I had BP checks for a couple months after that to make sure I was doing fine without the meds.
Give it a few weeks and I'm sure your body will bounce back.

Congrats again!

I had PIH that turned into pre-eclampsia. I started with the high blood pressure at 30 weeks (bed rest started here), and it continued until I failed my 24 hour urine at 36 weeks and then DD was delivered by emergency c-section. I swelled up like a BALLOON after delivering DD, was told this was normal reaction from pre-eclampsia and my blood pressure remained elevated for about 4 weeks. I had to go back to the dr's weekly, since my incession (sp) became infected and it had to be re-opened, YIKES!!! Just take it easy the next couple of weeks, and you'll see an improvement. I'm sure that advice will be hard to tackle with twins!!!! Congrats and good luck!

First of all, CONGRATS on the new additions!

I too had Pre-E with my youngest DD, 6 1/2 yrs. ago; diagonosed at 33 1/2 wks. and induced immediately. Spent 4 days in the hospital because BP was still unstable. Came home and had to go to Dr. twice a week to start with and take Procardia (terrible headaches)! Had to switch to different med., can't remember what it was right now, but it stabilized my BP and I finally quit taking it 3 months later. I was fine for about 4 years then BP crept back up and I have been on meds since. Current Dr. has determined it to be "inherited hypertension".

Good Luck!

thanks everyone! oh, and procardia was one of the meds they tried. horrible headache, heart racing in the 140s and sunburn like flush face and chest. completely freaked me out. the other drug they tried was labatalol. went dizzy and had bed spins. fun fun!

so glad to hear your stories and know that it can go away. I may need drugs still, but sounds like for the most part they aren't long term.

Oh my goodness!!! Congratulations to you.
So what did you decide on for names? Hope to see pictures when you are feeling better...which hopefully will be soon. :D

I can't believe I didn't even post their names! LOL! Andrew Richard and Katharine Grace were born on friday at 3:26 in the afternoon. Yep, both within the same minute. We have it on video so I know its not mistaken. Anyway, Andrew (Drew) was 5lb10oz and Katie was 4lb10 oz. Other than some jaundice, ABO, and a hip click for Katie, they are doing so well! Andrew spent a couple of days under the lights while we were in the hospital but we were able to have him in our room and neither needed any NICU time or similar.

We're all tired and hoping to settle into some semblance of routine soon. Hoping for maybe an hour or 2 of sleep tonight anyway :)
