Are the people who get upgrades at checkin paying full price (rack rate), or do you sometimes get upgraded on discount (AP. castmember rates, etc)? I would love to know if there is a trend of some sort for those who are chosen at random.

We were upgraded both times we stayed at AKL from standard view to savanna view. Both times I had a postcard rate. In December 2001, we paid $134 + tax. In December 2002, we paid $109 + tax. I've heard of others being upgraded at AKL, as it seems to me most of the upgrades happen at this resort.

How do you get the postcard rate? Is random, or do you have sign-up?
I'd appreciate the reply!;)

Postcards are sent out at random.....no one knows why some people get them and others don't......I've never gotten one, but I'd like to....

Hope this helps

I was upgraded once at AKL. I believe I had an AP rate at the time. I think it has a lot more to do with availability than with the rate you're paying, but I could certainly be wrong. With Disney it's hard to guess.

Upgrades have more to do with what's available and what you originally booked than the rate that you booked at.

I think you'll find people who book at all rates getting an upgrades.

I'd be more curious to see what you get upgraded to.

I had a woods view room at WL and was upgraded to a courtyard view, but I did not ask for a view I asked the CM for a kings sized bed. So the view was not my prioroty, but the room was wonderful.

My parents and my family were both upgraded in May of this year at the Contemporary. We were both staying at a code rate (standard room/garden wing). When the CM that was checking my family in realized that we were with my parents they upgraded both of us to adjoining Tower Rooms 10th floor overlooking Bay Lake. Big surprise for us : ) we weren't even sure we would like CR, but ended up loving it. :)

I guess its just the mood the CM's are in and the availablility at the time. Good luck!!

Did anyone fax their requests to the Room Assigner before arriving?

I had booked (through AAA) 2 rooms at POFQ and had to switch because of it's closing. I took the $10 p/n upgrade to WL. I booked 2 standard rooms and requested 1Q/BB and 2Q - both non-smoking. When we checked in, it was already in the computer that we were upgraded to Courtyard. The CM at check-in had nothing to do with it.

I was recently upgraded at the Polynesian from a gardenview to concierge. I kind of think it was because it was a Friday at about 6:00 pm and the resort was full, plus the Hawaii building had just opened back up. I was using a castmember rate but I don't think that had anything to do with it. The cm checking us in did not do it immediately either, he left the counter for about 20 minutes and went to the back.

Do you have to ask to be upgraded? Do you just ask if there is a possibility..or do they randomly give them out?? Is it rude to ask. I hate seem like those people who expect freebies.

This past August we received a complimentary upgrade at the Grand Floridian (from standard to lagoon view) when we went on the Fairytale package. I can't confirm this but I truly believe I was upgraded because I did *not* fax a room request in. The reason is because I got on the subject with the CM behind the desk on faxes and he mentioned that they were getting out of hand and would probably be implementing a policy to discontinue the practice. He said many of them go unread anyway as they receive too many. He said many internet sites now say you should fax a request in and then follow up with a call and he said it's not necessary as long as you have your requests on your original reservation. He said the power of the internet is swamping them with faxes and phone calls! After I thanked him for the upgrade he said thank you for allowing me to make the magic happen!

Upgrade has nothing to do with the rate you pay. We were upgraded at the YC from std view to waterview(and it was an awesome water view),and we were booked at the convention rate of $199 which is lower than AP or code rates at that time. I did not ask for this, and didn't realize it until we opened the door to our room

We were upgraded in Aug. 2002 at the WL from std to woodview.
We had a great rate of about $135.00 a night and the upgrade was already in the computer at check-in.
My husband and I both agree with Partyof5, we think we got the upgrade because we didn't fax or call in a room request. All we did was request bunkbeds when we made our reservations.

We were upgraded at AKL in September on a postcard rate. We booked standard and were given a poolview room. We did not request anything but nonsmoking.

We were upgraded from standard to woods view at WL last June, booked at an AP rate. It seemed to be in the computer when we checked in, as wonderful as he was, I don't think the CM had anything to do with it. :D We also didn't fax or call in any special requests, just asked for non-smoking and bunk beds when I booked with CRO.

Hmmmmm, is there a non-faxing pattern of success here?

After I thanked him for the upgrade he said thank you for allowing me to make the magic happen!

I have also heard about this, that there are so many requests which turn the CMs right off. I will not make any requests, and hope to get an upgrade from concierge to suite! LOL

This past September, we were upgraded at AKL from a standard view to a Deluxe Savannah View. Isn't that crazy? I don't know why we were, all I had requested was bunkbeds and non-smoking. We were a party of 4 so didn't need the daybed, but it was so nice having the extra seating and the view was fantastic. I cried at check-in. The CM did not leave, so it apparently was in the computer already. But since she delivered the news....... I LOVE YOU, JANICE!!!!
:love2:

ETA- We were on the Fairy Tale Package.
