question for those in NC

My daughter has her driving log that we fill out every time she drives. She has to have 60 hours logged and 10 must be night time hours.

Fist 6 months she was not allowed to drive between 9pm and 5:30am. Second 6 months she can drive any time. Once she gets her licenses she will go back to only being allowed to drive 9pm to 5:30am (unless coming home from work.)

So my question is what counts as night time driving for those 10 hours needed? I thought it was after 9pm due to the above, but today somebody told me I was wrong. I can not find the answer on the DMV site.

I'm not in NC but DD had to do the same kind of thing before getting her license. I considered 'at night' as when it's dark outside. I never saw anything with specific hours of the day for 'night time'.

Do you mean NOT being able to drive the hours in red?

Nighttime should definitely be when it is dark outside.

This isn't a rule for all of NC - we didn't have to keep track of hours driving. Maybe my daughter's driver's ed course covered it but she only had six hours behind the wheel in that course. I would contact your local DMV for your county's rules.

Anytime after 9pm is night time driving according to the DMV officer we had.

This is part of the new graduated license requirments that went into effect a few years ago. My daughter will be able to drive after 9pm starting next month so she can get her 10 hours of night time driving.

This is interesting. My daughter is now a freshman in college so it wasn't that long ago that she had a learner's permit and then a limited drivers license (no driving after 9 for six months, etc.) and we never had to log driving hours. When did this go into effect?

I was wondering too. DS got his license about 18 months ago and didn't need to keep a log.

In Georgia, the graduated licensing went into effect in 2007 & is called Joshua's Law. Most states have pretty much the same requirements:

30 hours in a classroom Driver's Ed program approved by the Dept of Driver Services
40 hours of drive time instruction with a licensed driver over 21, with at least 6 hours of nighttime driving. These hours must be logged in on a form from Driver Services.

BUT:
A 30 hour class/6 hour drive time by a certified Driving School & Driving Instructor eliminates the 40 hour logged in drive time in Georgia.

If the person is 17 years old they do not have to take the class or driving instruction but still have the same driving limits as any under 18.

It's new within the past couple of years. My older DD didn't have to do it, but DS does.

As I understand it, with your learner's permit you can drive anytime with your supervising driver. It's when you have your graduated permit (when you can drive by yourself) that you can't drive after 9 p.m. for the first six months.

Nighttime driving is anytime it's dark outside. For example, my younger daughter drives us to school every morning, and in the winter that means she's doing nighttime driving.

It's not location, it's time: That is, the log-your-hours thing is a very recent change. My older daughter, who is 19 now, didn't have to do it, but my youngest, who currently has a permit, does have to do it.

This is NOT the graduated license -- that's been around a while. My oldest had a graduated license. My youngest is one of the first affected by the logs.

This is all about the state attempting to force people to do what good parents were already doing: Restricting new drivers until they gain the experience to handle themselves behind the wheel. Giving kids plenty of practice before they're turned loose on their own.

Wow, what state are you in? My daughter is 28 and, here in Maryland, she had to fill out a log when she was 16 and learning to drive (12 years ago). Our book included, driving in the rain, passing on a two lane road, nighttime driving, I don't remember what else.

I'm in NC which is why I responded to this thread. And my daughter has only had her drivers license for 2 years. She did not have to keep a driving log.
