I am currently working part-time teaching three full days a week. I just received tenure. Love my job and the people I work with. Having the two days off to take care of my kids, clean, food shop, app't, etc. keeps me grounded. My boss came to me yesterday and said that my job might have to go full-time keeping me at my school for three days and then two other schools at two different days or maybe am at one and pm at another school. I don't want to get stressed over this. If I don't want to do it ...will I have to resign and give up my job.

Well, you really have to take a look at your school's negotiated contract. You are tenured and are gauranteed a job, even if it isn't the one you currently hold. Involuntary re-assignment is always possible in any school, and it sounds like they are doing this to you, in a way. If you decide to do the full-time and stick it out for this school year, you could see what opens up next year and asked to be re-assigned somewhere else in the school, if the opportunity provides itself for the schedule you want. Good luck in your decision!

I agree with the PP. Tenure only gaurantees you a job, not necessairly your current job or schedule.you will probably have to take it for this year or resign. nexdt year you would be able to see if you can transfer somewhere else, but in our system even with tenure you must be released by your principal before you can transfer.

Are you at a public school? Where I am, a continuing contract guarantees me that amount of work the next year. They can't force me to take more. They could, however, assign me a different configuration of hours.

If you belong to your education association, this might go against your contract because it is occuring in the middle of the year. I would check with someone to see if it is grievable.:confused3

I've never heard of someone being forced to change contracts mid-year which is what this is. You had an agreement of 3 days. They should honor that until the contract ends.

Just a thought.

That is if you sign a contract. I am in my 3rd year and have never signed one b/c I am on an alternate certificate.

Yes, that's true. No contract, no luck.

I hope they don't make her change. There is nothing worse than being told you have to do a job that you don't want to do. Especially when you are happy with how things are.

Does this sound like a voice of experience?? YES!!!!:scared1:

Can you afford to not work at all?

In this economy, teaching jobs are beyond scarce.

That's why this thing has me :confused3 . I'd think that if they posted the two day job, they'd have plenty of applicants. They'd have the people who want part time employment as well as people from the sub pool who want full time but haven't yet found jobs.

If you want to stay part-time, then I would suggest that you see if you can make the situation work and solve the problem for your boss.

See if you can find another person who is interested in working 2 days a week, or you take 2, give them the 3 if you want.

It sounds like they need someone to work the other 2 days but if there was another qualified person to take those 2 days, that might be acceptable.

I am a teacher too and I just went back to work full-time but on a reduced contract, my choice. My youngest is in school now!

There are always teachers who are looking to work part-time and there are very few part-time jobs for certified teachers.

It may not work, but I have found with my boss, if I come to her with a solution that works, she very often says yes!:goodvibes
