Question for Orlando Residents

DD and I will be moving to Orlando next June. We are currently in the process of building a house in Windermere. DD is 15 and will be starting her Junior year in Florida. Based on where we are building, she will be attending West Orange High School. She is very much into acting and theatre, so I tried to get her admitted to the performing arts magnet program at Dr. Phillips High School, but you cannot enter that program after the beginning of your sophomore year. Unless she were in their magent program, they will not allow her to attend Dr. Phillips since we will be living in the West Orange High School district.

I would appreciate your feedback on West Orange High School. I put a message on the Orlando Sentinel message board and got a reply saying that West Orange isn't a good school. They gave no reasons for their opinion. They indicated that I should look into private schools. Since I am retiring, I'd rather not pay for a private school unless West Orange is really not a good school.

Specific feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!!

West Orange High is actually a rather good school. I should let you know that I am biased, my wife teaches Science there. The school is an older school, so things look a little more run down. There are very good teachers there, especially in the honors program.

WOHS also has a very good drama department and Thespian group. This past month, they put on The King and I, and it was spectacular. It was on par with any Musical that would come to the local Perfomring Arts Center.

There are alot of rivalrys between schools in Orange County so maybe someone that didn't have specific info may be partial to Apopka, Boone or Dr. Phillips.

Where are you building in Windermere, I live in that area as well.
