So, I got a job providing childcare at our local temple, and I have to confess, I don't know anything about what goes on! I'm just really confused because the parents come in and out and it doesn't seem to be anything like a christian service. So could I get a basic outline of how the service timeline is?

And also, one of my fellow babysitters said something about not writing in temple? Is this right, or is my hearing just wrong? And if this is right, can I still bring coloring things for them?

Thanks to all you guys, I was so ashamed today when I had no idea what was going on!

Can you ask someone at temple what movement the temple is?
(Example: Reform, Conservative, Othodox)

I can give a general statement which is that Friday through Sunday evening is a holy day. (May be Sat. depending on the congregation.) Depending on the movement, the restrictrions may be no writing. In this case the children may not be able to color.

Also regarding Services some synagogues hold all day services or a few services throughout the day. Its hard to give a timeline.

No writing, no coloring, no cutting, no electronic games.

does anyone have any ideas what the girls could do with the kids for fun? I guess there were about 40 children yesterday and 6 baby sitters (3 sophomores and 3 juniors). We have a lot of childrens books here at home. Would it be acceptable to take some Berenstain Bears books (we have TONS of those and they are relatively short and always teach a nice lesson)? The girls said yesterday was pretty chaotic and they would like to have a little more organization today.

books are great. board games are good too. Dancing is appropriate (think hokey pokey-no recorded music). Telling stories. concentration, card games.

with the writing ban it sounds like its a Conservative synagogue. that means no musical instruments either. but singing is allowed.

our temple offered babysitting for Rosh Hashanah yesterday and today from 9:15 (when services began) until about 1:00, and will do the same next week for Yom Kippur. services ended about 1:30 today, I think, but last all day for Yom Kippur. our usual Saturday morning service runs from about 9:15 until noon or so. we don't offer child care during evening services.

The "in and out" might be because this is the High Holy Days. My bosses are Jewish and they got an extensive schedule of all sorts of things being offered at the synagogue this weekend and next. Depending on which things people are attending I can see how it would seem like folks are constantly coming and going. I don't think that is what happens during a typical Saturday, but I could be wrong.

Stories are always good. I am trying to think of some of the other things the kids do at the synagogue preschool. Puzzles, Play Doh (which might be a little messy), playing with toy dishes, dolls, cars/trucks/trains. Have fun!

Meg said the books were a big hit today. She said there are no toys there (dolls, dishes etc) and only a few games. Not as many kids today either! Thanks for the ideas everyone!
