Is there a "good" time for purchasing a computer? Are the specials I am seeing right now due to the graduating seniors? Or would I be better off waiting until the early summer? Do computers have "seasons"??

I need to get one for my son going off to college. Found a Gateway for $900... 2.2GHz, 256MB DDR SDRAM, 40GB, CD-RW/DVD, 17 inch flat LCD monitor.

I know most people prefer Dells, but the Gateway is less expensive.
Opinions? Thanks! :)

Computer prices continue to drop as new models/bells/whistles come out; the model you want today will be cheaper in 6 months or so. :)

Computer sales typically come in January but there are other times throughout the year as well.

Just from personal experience, avoid Gateway (also keep an eye on their financial situation - you want to make sure they'll be there for service). Dell runs some great specials on their web site. I have no experience with Compaq but dislike HP ("no, you can't upgrade THAT") and they are now one & the same. I've had good luck with my most recent one - it's an emachines that I picked up at Best Buy for an amazing price after all of the rebates.

It seems to me computer prices go down in August.:) In Georgia, we've had a sales tax break day in August (for educational items, including computers). Last year, I noticed several places had good deals on computers about that time.:)

I've seen some Dells advertised now for $599.:) (2.0GHz, 128MB DDR-SDRAM, 30GB, 17" Monitor, CD-RW Drive, CD/DVD ROM drive)

Ok I know eveyone has there own veiws on what is a good and bad computer.
If you don't have alot of cash to spend on a name brand unit.
Go and buy a e-machine. The only thing is they have no name parts in the not name brand. You get with most setup monitor, keyboard, mouse.cpu, sound sys, printer, some include scanner, etc. this is my two cents.

DopeyRN- Just wanted to give you something else to think about. If your son is going away to school and living in a dorm, the rooms are very small. Have you considered getting him a laptop? My son is a freshman and lives in a dorm. He has been moved to 3 different rooms and they were all very small. He is very happy that he has a laptop for convenience. During winter break they have to take everything home and he just stuck the laptop in his bag and it was ready to come home. His laptop has cd rom, dvd player and anything else you could possibly have on a computer. If your son is going to a dorm, I would definately think about it.

Thanks to all for the replies. The laptops were the first thing we looked at, and for the money, of course, you get less computer. I offered to get the upgraded laptop, but he did not want to use his own money to pay the difference...(imagine that!!!). He did spring testing last week and talked to people on campus and came home saying the desk top will work. Decisions, decisions...

Another vote for avoiding Gateway. Stick with Dell or purchase one at a local Best Buy or Office Max. There are always bargains (aka last month's model) if you look around. Good hunting.

My opinion is STAY AWAY FROM COMPAQ!!!! We had several of them here in my office and in another office I was at and I have had nothing but bad experience with them!!!
