ok i was wondering, whats the proper name to call your country? i know people call it England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom, but whats the actual name? someone help

Well, it depends what you mean by 'your country'!

Great Britain is defined as the political entity which is made up of England, Scotland and Wales, including their offshore islands. It does not include the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands nor Northern Ireland.

The term United Kingdom (UK) refers to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is a political union rather than a geographical term.

The British Isles is a name without official status and is geographical rather than political. It comprises all the main and offshore islands of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

As someone born in England and now living in Wales I can understand why it gets confusing to people from overseas! But if you want to stay friends with anyone from Wales, Ireland or Scotland, try not to call us all 'English' (or vice versa!)

Absolutely NOT!!

I didn't know those definitions without going to look them up . I knew they all meant different things, but I wouldn't have been confident about getting it right without checking.

I was told by immigration on both sides of the Atlantic, that "UK" is the preferred term when referring to our nation. It seems to be the most "politcally correct" as peoples from Wales, Ireland and Scotland tend to get prickly if referred to as "British" rather than Welsh, Irish or Scottish.

Us here in England tend to be more casual about the whole thing for some reason. Maybe its the soccer jerseys that tell everyone where we are from . That was a joke by the way, we dont all own one here in Blighty!

Most Americans seem to think I am from Australia for some reason. I dont watch Neighbours that much for goodness sake! It must be my Estuary English that makes me sound like Rolf Harris!
