Hey everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about their experience with having their wisdom teeth pulled? I just had 4 of mine pulled on Thursday and am VERY swollen. My face is like two times the size that it normally is. My pain is not too bad, but I was wondering what I can do besides ice? I have used ice a lot and my face is staying the same. Just imagine Martin Short in Pure Luck......LOL.........yeah that's me!!! Ha ha. I can't wait to eat again!!!!!! If I could eat anything I would eat at Tony's in MK and have Spagetti and Meatball, Lady and the Tramp style......yummmmmmmmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
:D

Strange, some people I know claim to not have had any swelling...both my lower ones caused some swelling...had no swelling with the one upper one I had pulled...either way, it should go down in a day or two, I think.:)

I had 2 pulled (upper and lower on same side) 10 days ago. The swelling was the worst the day after I had them pulled, then went down a little each day. By day 5, the swelling wasn't noticeable anymore to other people, but there was still some visible bruising. Even today, though, I can still feel a tiny bit of swelling, but no one else can tell at all. As uncomfortable as you are, you were smart to have all 4 done at once! I had my other 2 pulled 10 years ago, and it has taken me this long to go back! Hope you're feeling back to your old self in no time!

Everyone's experience with Wisdom Teeth is different. When I had mine out, I went bowling the next night! My sister had a dry socket & she was sore for a week & a half!

The best thing that you can do is place ice on the outside of your jaw for 20 minutes on one side, then 20 on the other - back and forth! Very rarely do extraction sites get infected - your body is just coping from the Oral Surgery! (That's why you look like Chip & Dale!) You'll probably be back to normal sized cheeks in a few days!

Ibuprofen (advil) will help to get the swelling down, too. It's an anti-inflammatory & it also has some pain refief!

For about a week after I had mine pulled, I was swollen like a chipmunk and could only eat Freeze Pops!

my best advice is to be careful with the pain medication they give you. i was in such horrible pain (ended up w/2 dry sockets). my mom told me it was ok to take extra percocet, while at the same time, i was pretty much eating nothing. i puked for a day straight because i was overdosed on the drugs! it was miserable.

and i didn't swell up until a couple days after. i had been icing constantly (20 minutes on, 10 minutes off), but when i got so sick, i wasn't icing. that's when the swelling showed up.

I had mine pulled 2 years ago, and my gums were swollen, but never my cheeks. As marsh0013 said, be very careful with that pain medication - the meds I was given (I can't recall the name) made me very dizzy/lightheaded and upset my stomach very badly. It worked, but the side effects were pretty bad.

My best advice is just to take it very easy for the next few days. :)

I had 3 wisdom teeth pulled last September (I had the other one pulled about 7 years ago). My cheeks were swollen for about a week and a half to two weeks. They were pretty bruised up on the outside too. I went back to work 2 days after I had them pulled one lady thought I'd fallen down some steps or soemthing. I didn't do much ice treatment on them or anything.

I had mine pulled 1 1/2 yrs ago and I was good about the icing. I was stressed the week and that caused my jaw to hurt.

Still have all mine. DH had his out many years ago. The ice thing seemed to work best according to him. Keep it cold and when you get tired of keeping it cold have someone else give you the ice to keep it cold. It will get better. Good luck.

I put my ice in a bra and put it over my head. Looked very funny, but it worked!

Probably a great idea but...
Oh the visual there! I think it would hurt to laugh!

I had 4 wisdom teeth out about 11 years ago. My mouth was very swollen and once I was able to take the cotton out I felt much better! I had maybe a weeks prescription of percoset and for the first couple of days it helped a lot. Since I was 17 or 18 at the time I remember I called in sick at my part time job but felt well enough to hang out at a friends house LOL. I pretty much lived on jell-o, soft egg noodles and pudding.

Thanks everyone for your advice! I'm still swollen but my Mom said not as bad as I was. So, I guess the swelling is going down but I don't see it. I feel so embarassed to go out in public :D As far as pain goes, I'm still in some pain, especially when I try to eat something. Today I tried to eat scrambled eggs and it was a hard job. I'm so hungry though!!!! Oh well, I'm glad I did all 4 at once b/c I wouldn't have gone back for a LONG time! :D Hopefully only a couple more days of discomfort.

My dentist says she should charge me by the tooth for my twice yearly clleaning. I am 56yo and still have all my teeth =, including all 4 wisdom teeth. In all that time I have only had a problem once, many years ago, when I got a piece of peanut jammed down behind one of the lower ones. I got it out fairly quickly but the gum was cut slightly and got real infected within 24hrs. Took almost 2 weeks and 3 visits to the dentist to get the infection cleaned up.
I looked like a chipmunk for most of those 2 weeks. I can only imagion what I would look like if I ever have to have them pulled.
