my sister graduates high school on the 12th of june, and i was thinking of flying home on the 11th and coming back on the 13th. i have a couple of questions though before i request that time off..

1. should i also request the 14th off in case of bad weather or the airport is closed or something and i can't get out on the 13th?

2. if my plane doesn't leave and i'm not back in florida when i originally said i would, will i still be reprimanded even though it was out of my control? or will they understand that my plane didn't leave and let it go?

i've been watching the prices for flights from/to mco and it looks like i'll be paying around $210. not bad, but i would really like to buy it sooner over later in case the prices go up as it gets closer to summer and vacations.

I would request the 14th off as well. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also you don't want to get home really late at night and then be scheduled early the next morning.

And yes if you did call out, you would still get the point.

I had this same situation this last spring. My sister graduated June 8th so I took off the 7th 8th and 9th. I was scheduled to work the 10th and had no problems. If you want to be safe you can request the 14th off, but there are generally less weather delays in the summer than fall/winter. If you have to call in for a shift you get the point no matter what. If you watch the weather forecast and it looks like severe weather for the 13th you could always try to switch shifts with someone.
