Question about use year

I'm new to the whole DVC thing and I was reading the understanding your use year thread and I have a question.
Can you ask for a specific month your use year begins, or your guide just pulls one out of a hat so to speak?

Typically, they do have a UY they will offer you. For example, when they first started selling BLT, most were offered a Feb UY.

However, you can ask for a different one if you know there is a specific one you want. We did this--we wanted June and that is what we asked our guide for when we bought BLT.

Good luck!

It seems that Disney tells the Guides which UY to sell and they are reluctant to let you buy a different one.

Buying resale you can pick the contract that has everything you want plus you are supporting the resale market which could result in a higher sales price later when you decide to sell.

:) We were offered December--which lucky for us, is perfect. If buying direct I would get exactly what I wanted becasue you are paying a premium. I would make that a necessary part of the sale and then make sure it was correct on the paperwork.

You can request a certain use year, however they need to have that UY in their inventory. If it is "sold out" you can turn to resale to look for the contract size and UY you would like.

When I bought, they were typically offering 5 months behind, I think that was the 100% banking deadline at the time. I wanted April so I wanted until September to buy that way I only owed dues from September to December for that year.

Keep in mind that not every month is used for use years. There are no such thing as a January, May, July, or November use year.

Also, not all use years are created equal. You might think that points are distributed equally between the eight different use years, but they aren't. Each resort is slightly different, but in general at WDW there are some use years that are more heavily used than others. For example, December and February use years have the most points with 17.6% and 16.8% of the total points, respectively. April and October have the least amount of points with 8.0% and 8.3%, respectively. The other months fall somewhere between. So that means there are twice as many points available with December and February use years as there are for April or October.

Bottom line, there are some months you can't request because they don't exist. Other months are more or less likely to be available in the inventory DVD has for sale.

I'll also make note of a point I haven't seen in this thread yet. Don't sweat your use year too much. Even if you find the perfect use year for how you plan to vacation, today, preferences and life situations change over time. You'll have your contract for a long, long time. The "perfect" use year for you will probably change multiple times while you own the contract. Young couple, Family with pre-school kids, Family with young kids, Family with older kids, Empty Nesters, Retirees... your vacation preferences will probably change at major phases like these. Don't walk away from a good deal just because you can't find the exact use year you had in mind.

This is exactly what we're looking for. I just hope they have it available when we're ready other wise we may look into resale....Thanks all for the replies.:)

We were given a June UY when we bought BLT in April '10. At the time I didn't know that we could request a different one. Not that UY matters much to us; we travel to WDW at all different times of the year.
