Question about trading for DVC through II?

I was able to trade my dad's timeshare week for a week at OKW for our upcoming trip. The only problem is the week that was available is Sun to Sun, but we had already purchased our airfare (got $29 each way on SW) for Tuesday to Tuesday. I was just planning on checking out on Sunday and staying the extra two nights at one of the All Stars, but I was wondering if perhaps DVC would allow us to make our stay Tuesday to Tuesday. Any one know if they would do this?

They will not allow you to change it in any way. If you get the DDP you'll still have to get it for the 7 days of the reservation. Remember you have the extra $95 fee. You may also want to check in to changing your air.

The other option is to rent points from a member from Sun - Tues on the end of your trip if the airfare is that great of a savings.

I already knew about dining plan, but I think it will still be worth it for us because we will still be able to use it until midnight of the day we switch resorts. Right now the savings on the airfare is still worth it to do it this way, although I keep checking it daily to see if we can get another good fare to get down there earlier. Right now there are no studios available at OKW and we don't want to pay the extra for the 1 bedroom for what is supposed to be a quick budget trip (of course it is growing to be more than that). Also with the All Stars we can cancel up until 5 days before if i find a better airfare, so that seems to make the most sense right now. I just thought maybe the would be ok with changing it, but if not that's fine too.

Had to read your post twice. I think you meant to say checking OUT on Sunday and staying the two nights at All-Stars.

So If I read it correctly, you have Sun-Sun, but won't be checking in until the Tuesday after. And then check out on Sun and stay the Sun-Mon at All-Stars.

If you won't be checking in on that Sunday, be sure to notify them. You want to make sure your reservation isn't cancelled as a no-show. With an II exchange that may not be an issue, but you may want to make sure.

Can I ask which timeshare you traded, what time of year and did you have to wait long?

I can't speak for the OP but I can answer the questions generically. It usually take a 5 star or highly rated standard resort in a unit size at least close to that desired. Usually best to be a 1 BR of better. It also requires planning ahead, best for 11-12 months out. A match through II usually comes in around 9-10 months out or 6-7 months out with another flourish of activity right at the 60 day window.

It's my Dad's so I'm not sure, but I don't think it's the top of the line. It was Williamsburg Plantation, not sure what week. I traded a 2 bedroom unit for a one bedroom unit. But I thought it was worth it since that's all we needed and then we didn't have to have a car and got to try out DVC. I kept checking everyday and when it came up I ran upstairs and woke up my DH and said he had to make a decision right then. We were probably about 60 days out.

Thanks everyone. I was just wondering because we have Marriotts Oceanwatch in Myrtle Beach for the 4th of July week and was wondering how it would trade or if I would be better off trying for a trade with a DVC member vs going through II. Maybe trying to trade w/a member would be easier because I know when we owned DVC I tried for 2 years for Myrtle Beach and couldn't get in in the summer and we didn't care which resort or which week..

Thanks again for all the info!

You'd be nuts trading a Platinum plus Ocean watch unit for just about anyting and that includes a smaller unit at DVC. If you do trade OW, do so request first and only for the top options at prime time. Generally you'd be better off doing direct exchanges or renting your OW week and using the cash for other options. If you want to do much trading, consider buying a week appropriate to do so, one that doesn't cost $30-40K. Also, don't trade your week for points, that too is a VERY poor value in your situation.

We don't plan on really doing much trading. I can't see trading it either to get something of less value plus they are all dedicated 2 bedrooms. We may just try to rent for DVC or if I can talk my husband into buying some points again. Or maybe looking into another less expensive timeshare for exchanging. I don't know.

That's what I've been thinking about doing for a couple years now, is buying an inexpensive timeshare for trading. My dad is thinking about selling his so maybe that will be what I do. But for now they have more weeks than they use, so they let us use if and we just have to pay the exchange fee (and the resort fee at DVC) so that is a better deal for us right now.

Can't beat that deal. Even if you have to pay the maint fee of the week traded, it's still likely you'd come out ahead in almost all situations, even for a studio and certainly for a 1 BR. Likely your father is looking at the underlying value of the week in question prior to depositing with II. You don't want to be in dbertola situation where you'd be trading something worth $2300-2500 cash for weeks you could easily have gotten with something that cost FAR less.

4th of July week is the toughest/busiest week in Myrtle Beach. You would definately be on the losing end of an II trade into Disney. Direct trade would be best in my opinion.

I don't think there timeshare is worth a whole lot, it's Williamsburg Plantation, which I could be wrong, but I don't think it's high interest resort. And I think their week is in Feb, not sure about that either. They got some kind of deal when they bought though, if they deposit the week to II they get an extra week. I'm not exactly sure how that works either. I don't really know all the ends and outs, since I have never bought one.

Williamsburg in general is relatively lower demand much like Branson and Orlando. Williamsburg plantation is 5* and it's my understanding it's a very nice place. If their week gets a bonus week, it must be a fairly desirable week. It should do about as well trading in to DVC as far more in demand resorts.
