Question about tipping?

When you're staying in a nice hotel and you order room service, most hotels automatically add the gratuity to the bill (18%-20%).

Do you tip them more when they deliver it, or do you just leave it at the gratuity that was already added to the bill?

if already added no

unless I am on expense account

It depends. If it's a "service charge" on the bill, the server isn't getting any of it. If it's listed as a "gratuity," they are getting at least some of it.

It's listed this way:

Subtotal $8.99
Auto Gratuity $1.62
Tax $0.81
Total with Tax $11.42
--------------------------------
Please pay this amount $11.42
--------------------------------
Gratuity ....................
Total.........................

I gave him more, but whenever I stay somewhere like this (a very nice hotel on business), I always wonder if I'm over-tipping (but OTOH, I don't want to under-tip someone either). With the automatic gratuity plus the extra, it winds up being half as much as my sandwich was to start with! :rotfl:

I'm on business, so I get a per diem (as opposed to an expense account) ;) , so I don't actually get reimbursed for spending more.

Just curious and thought I'd get some opinions. Who better to ask than the Dis professionals? Thanks!

A few dollars more to me seems right. Also, I would be upset about the automatic gratuity being taxed.
