Question about tipping in cash.

I was reading in a dining review post that when the person was going to pay the tip in cash they were informed by a few of the servers at different restaurants that they needed to indicate how much they were going to tip by writing the amount on the bill before they paid. I understand that the bill (DDP) will arrive with a suggested amount of either 18 or 20% which is fine. I do plan on tipping in cash however. So what is the logic behind them having you write the tip down before you leave the table. Also is this the normal procedure for most table service places?

I have no idea, I don't understand that part. I would assume you need to write 0 in th tip line and then leave cash on the table. I have people pay with credit cards all the time, write zero or a line through the tip line and then leave cash for the tip..

I know a server posted and it seems like the computer did need an amount - I thought we were to write "cash" on a line - and maybe $0?

it still amazes me how complicated Disney has made the whole process!

If your tipping in cash there is no need to write anything in the line.

I would be concerned about writing down the amount, paying it in cash and then finding it on the room charge when I check out. I would talk to the manager of the restaurant before signing the check.

Or to play it safe, charge the tip to your room and then pay it off when you check out.

Yeah that is why I am sure you would put 0 in the tip line, if you were to write in a amount it would be charged on your card. Or at least that is how its done at my restaurant...

We just got back last week, and paid cash for all of our tips. At many restaurants we ordered wine or apps that weren't included in DDP and paid cash for them as well.
When the server brought over the check, I would write "CASH" in the tip line so there was no confusion, hand them the KTTW, ask them to process whatever is included in the dining plan, and told them we would be paying cash for everything else. Then they would come back with the DDP receipt for me to sign, and a separate bill for any not included items. I left the cash for those items + the tip for my entire bill with the server when we were leaving. No problems or confusion anywhere.

You don't have to write anything on the line, but I have heard of dishonest servers (not necessarily at Disney) writing in their own amount for a tip if you leave the tip line blank. If tipping in cash, I'm always sure to write 0 on the tip line, just in case!

If you are paying your tip in cash, please make sure your server gets it and you don't leave it on the table when you leave. Yes, I have seen other people scoop up the cash after the party has left the table.
