Does anyone know if they can ship the pets to be adopted or kept in foster homes? We live a long ways from that area but I would love to take in a displaced animal so they could be spared. Does anyone know how this works?

Hrm, I am not sure but I bet if you call the LSU Vet School they can give you information. Here's the website for the LSU Vet School..

They showed a boxer in a tree and a lab ballancing on a wall tonight. It was so sad. I wonder if people will go back and pick up their pets now.

Hi,all. Some of you might remember me as DocRafiki from a while back. I went to elem, jr high, and high school in Slidell, college at Southern Miss, and vet school at LSU and now live in Orlando. The animals were highly neglected during our hurricanes, and they suffered and died needlessly. My biggest stress in the aftermath last year was making sure my pets were safe and not overheating. If I did not have a job where I could bring my pets and have them escape from my 100+ degree house, I don't think they would have made it. I also called our local SPCA to try to volunteer to take in some foster animals, and THEY WOULD NOT LET ME!!! I'm going to paste something that I sent around on Myspace. This is who I gave my donation to...

This is happening in Slidell, LA, the town where I grew up. Last year, one shelter in Orlando put to sleep 6,000 EXTRA pets due to the hurricanes. Many of these HAD owners, but they couldn't take care of them any longer since they had to stay in shelters and hotels that wouldn't allow pets. Others simply couldn't afford to care for them in the long time span before insurance and FEMA kicked in. Other pets died of heat stroke while living outside or in homes without air conditioning. For many children affected by this tragedy, the loss of a pet may be the most traumatizing aspect of it all.

If you feel like your money would get lost in the billions being thrown around by the Red Cross, consider this small organization where every dollar really makes a difference for the little ones often neglected by other agencies. Read and pass it on to anyone who might care...

Pet Rescue Efforts Underway in Slidell

Noah’s Wish Rescues 68 Dogs, 24 Cats and 7 Birds From Homes Destroyed by Katrina

As of 3 p.m. EST today, Noah’s Wish, a not-for-profit organization that exclusively deals with rescuing and sheltering animals in disasters reported that 68 dogs, 24 cats, 7 birds and 1 baby squirrel had been rescued and were being housed in a temporary animal shelter. The shelter was set up in a warehouse located at 1325 Bayou Lane in Slidell, Louisiana. Noah’s Wish is working with Slidell Animal Control Director Damian Anti to coordinate the rescue of hundreds of abandoned and stranded pets in the city of Slidell. Located directly north of Lake Ponchatrain, Slidell was devastated by Katrina.

"This morning we found a chihuahua sitting in a kitchen sink," said Terri Crisp, Founder and Director of Noah’s Wish. "The waters in the house rose so high, the poor little guy got swept into the sink, where he remained when the waters receded." The chihuahua was taken to the temporary animal shelter where he was checked by a veterinarian and provided food, water and a much-needed warm bed. All animals coming into the shelter will be tracked and Noah’s Wish hopes to be able to reunite owners with their four-legged family members.

The city of Slidell provided Noah’s Wish with the use of a large warehouse that has been converted into a temporary animal shelter. The city shelter was flooded with 10 feet of water. In a lot behind the warehouse, large tents are being erected over chain link dog runs. This temporary shelter will have the ability to house over 1,000 animals. Over 400 trained Noah’s Wish volunteers and 25 veterinarians will work around the clock to provide medical services, care and much-needed love and affection to these traumatized animals.

"Noah’s Wish exists to help people as much as we do pets," says Crisp. "Temporary shelter for pets will be offered to residents who lost their homes and are unable to keep their animals with them in shelters or hotels." Noah’s Wish also cares for wildlife. Yesterday, a baby squirrel was found among the rubble and was fed every four hours overnight by a volunteer. Trained Noah’s Wish volunteers from around the country are taking time off work and paying their own expenses to travel to Louisiana to assist with pet rescue.

Donations are desperately needed and can be made at NOAHSWISH "dot" ORG. Donations go directly to help the animals of this disaster and cash is preferred as it allows the organization to purchase the supplies needed. Information about pets stranded in Slidell homes should be emailed to info "at" noahswish "dot" org or a message can be left at 530-622-9313.

Terri Crisp reminds pet owners that hurricane season is far from over. "Don’t wait for an emergency to strike — be prepared for disasters and include your animals in your plan. Make sure your pet always has proper identification in case they are lost." Crisp has been devoted to animal disaster preparedness, education, and response since 1983. She has responded to over 50 disasters worldwide including floods, wildfires, hurricanes and traveled overseas to aid in the aftermath of the Asian tsunami in 2004. She has trained volunteers, animal welfare organizations, and emergency management agencies across the nation and around the world, building relationships that enable her to work with organizations during times of crisis. Crisp is the author of two books, Out of Harm’s Way and Emergency Animal Rescue Stories.

(Please post if you are giving to this agency. It would make me smile to know that I helped to add to their fund by spreading the word. I have dealt with humane societies, and I honestly would not waste my money.)

**sorry for the non-links. the dis would not let me post url's due to not having a high enough post count**

Oh, I have also heard that the LSU vet school is taking in animals, if anyone in Baton Rouge needs or can offer help.

and msdis -- some breed rescue groups have organized (before the hurricanes) ways to transport pets across the country via chains of volunteer drivers. you can google a certain breed rescue group (they have chapters all over the country) and you can find a lot of them on petfinder "dot" com. i haven't checked out that site since Katrina hit, but I'd bet they have a lot of info.

I started a thread too, for Petfinder.org they have a message board that is posting both needs, as well as anyone that can take in a pet from Katrina, either to adopt or to "foster"... the site did include a link to the vet school... as well as to the horses that need help!! ( I have afriend in Colorado taking training to be able to get down there and rescue horses!!)

This is a HUGE task!! Petsmart locations are accepting donations too!! I highly reccommend and have been posting everywhere about Noahs wish!!

Prayers, and :grouphug: and :wizard:

I do not recommend donating to Petsmart. That's all I can say about that.

Noah's Wish is excellent! Thanks for posting that Doc! :wave2:

Our local SPCA chapter in the Dallas area offered many of their adoptable animals for a much lower price this weekend to clear space for many displaced pets expected to arrive this coming week. I don't particularly care for the SPCA but they do appear to be taking in pets, at least in our area.

The animal rescue groups are now being allowed into most areas. Unfortunately it's not looking good for many animals left behind.

I work with/donate to the "Big 3" in ferret rescue, and other than the ferrets from the NOLA shelter--which evacuated to TX before the storm with all the animals--so far there are none to "save". :(

Boo Boo..are you Doc Rafiki under a different name? I wasn't sure if that was you, or if someone was posting what you posted.

Bumping this up! I contacted Best Friends via e-mail. They are compiling a list of people who want to help. Hopefully they'll be able to place animals soon.
