I was just wondering if the beach was just for show, or can you really swim in the water? The whole brain amobe thing freaked me out! Any input would be great! thanks

Quite a few years ago, you were able to swim, no more unfortunately.

I posted a photo on the picture of the day thread of the CM talking to the kids who were out in the water. I don't know what he said to them, but before he got his buggy turned around they were already back in the water. Swimming is prohibited. I see wading happening a lot, whether it is legal or not.

You useta coulda in the old days but no more. I don't know why as they have skiing and parasailing of which you usually get wet. I also believe the have a beach at the Grand Floridian which is the same water so I think it had to do with life guard costs...the ole mighty makin' a buck thing which is huge at Disney.

thanks everybody! Guess I will just have to hope the pool gets done in time!

I think there may be or have been at one time something to that amobe thing , :confused3, BUT as Steve pointed out there are plenty of lake activitites that are WET activities, skiing, etc., people do wade,, I wade when I go fishing at the lake and the last time I checked I still had most of my feet and legs.

My opinion is it's mostly a Disney don't want you in the water thing.:confused3

from what i understand all florida lakes have the brain amobe thing in them. also from what i understand, it affects kids worse then adults, and its usually kids swimming at the beaches, so they(disney) are protecting their collective butts by not allowing swimming in the lake. it could also be one of the reasons tha river country was closed down, being that it used lake water for the swimmin hole and slides

When I took the fishing excursion I was told about the amoeba thing by the guide.

He said that it hangs out amongst the weeds at the bottom of the lake and is deadly. If you don't go near the weeds you don't have to worry. Disney regularly 'cleans' the areas where there is a chance of people getting into the water, but not in the center.

It's not a matter of getting wet, it's touching those weeds that can cause an issue.

I used to love hanging out on a chair IN the water at the Poly :)

As a little kid we went swimming in the beach all the time.

The DW says that the brain amobe thing is what made me what I am today....

I always swam in the lake when I went tin the 70's & 80's

Which really doesn't make sense because I thought I read about the amoeba thing and it said basically it shooting up the nose/etc. is what causes it to get up in there? So um.. skiiing can get water up the nose right? :confused3
