Question about substitutions

I am trying to plan our meals and a few of the places we are planning on eating have sides that I won't eat. Will I be able to substitute french fries, assuming they have them of course? Also, I am somewhat of a picky eater. Will I be allowed to order items with certain things omitted? Like no pickles on a sandwich, or no sauce, etc.?

It's been almost 3 years since we've been and I can't remember how this works. Thanks!

In most cases, yes, the restaurant can substitute a side from one entree for a side from another entree. So as long as french fries are listed as a side for another entree, you can generally substitute them. They will not allow guests to substitute sides that have a separate price point.

Likewise, they can usually hold some items (e.g., sauces, condiments, etc.) from a dish if you request it. If not, they will let you know when you request the change.

It's not a problem. My husband orders whatever entree "naked" so all sauces are gone. Then he asks for ketchup and is a happy camper. He likes meat, cheese, and ketchup. For sides, as long as a side, any side, is listed on the menu anywhere (check the kids menus), you can usually sub that side for whatever yours has. Yep, my husband, naked steak and fries and he's happy (until he looks at the bill!).

Just to clarify, you can usually substitute any side that is listed as a side on another menu item. You generally cannot substitute a side that has a separate price point. For example, the Le Cellier menu has a section titled "Sides". You cannot request one of those Sides in place of the side listed on your entree.

As figment_jii said, in most cases you can substitute sides as long as it is already listed as a side with another entree. If it has a separate price point, then it cannot be subbed and you would have to pay for the side. One example was Flame Tree before it closed for renovations which had fries and onion rings as separate items with a price point. You could not sub the fries or onion rings for the cole slaw or baked beans which were the most common side dishes unless you paid for them.

Table service restaurants often have a separate section of the menu called "Sides" or "Accompaniments" which have separate price points so you cannot choose one of these sides as a substitute unless you pay for it.

Likewise modifications for entrees (e.g. no pickles or condiments or sauces) can be made unless the item is pre-packaged. Again, an example - the sandwiches at Starring Rolls cannot be modified because they are made elsewhere and not on site.

Thanks everyone! We are doing all counter service at this point, so it sounds like I will be OK :-)

I believe Flame Tree is the main counter service restaurant you'll need to be aware of. They serve coleslaw as a side, but have fries listed separately on the menu. You cannot sub fries for you side, because they're not available with any other meal.
