Question about split stays approach

Hi, I'm a new DVC member as of February 2023 (purchased at VGF) and I have a question about a split stay approach. I currently have 1 reservation for 6 nights in a 1 bedroom at the VGF in mid-December. I would love to do a split stay and do 3 nights at either CCV or BRV @ WL and 3 nights at VGF. Would I be better off leaving my reservation as is for now and at the 7 month mark call member services to help me modify my VGF reservation and add the other resort? Or should I go ahead and split this current reservation into 2 reservations, and then at the 7 month mark modify one of those to either CCV or BRV? It seems like I should use my home resort advantage to make sure I have the same category of room at VGF in the instance that I can't get my other resort (so go ahead and split while I have room category options). Thanks for any insight other members may have!

The best split stay strategy would be to go ahead and split it now -- to do that you would have to shorten the current one and make a second one for the other part of the split. MS cannot just "split" a stay, so there is always a chance of losing those nights unless you 100% know it has availability beyond the nights you are giving up.

Then at 7 months modify the part of the split you want at another resort. Worst case scenario is you can't get what you want and you just have MS merge the reservation back into one once you give up closer to time.

ETA: If you have extra points (don't borrow to do this as that is a one way transaction) you could always book your second part of the split at VGF and then shorten the original one (again assuming there is availability). That way you know you have the second part of the split prior to modifying your original reservation.

If you split, which I would if there's VGF availability, put someone else, even someone fictional, as lead guest. MS has combined things people don't want combined before.

I always book in segments when I want a split stay. This why, you can modify easily without risk of losing those nights, and waitlist without worrying they might cancel days you don’t want.

Yup like everyone said, split it now and just modify the part you are wanting to try and move to a different resort.

If you DONT get the split moved, id make sure to contact ms via chat to have them merge the two VGFs back into one reservation as well. You dont wanna have to move to another room in the middle of your stay at the same resort if you forget to do that.

edit: oops kes601 said that already lol, what i get for skimming.
