Question about split stay

I'm not sure if this is the right board for my question. If not, I apologize. This is where I lurk the most .

We have a free dining package booked and are arriving on Tuesday December 15th (we would have added more days in the beginning if we could, but this is the day free dining starts for the time we can go).

We have decided we'd like to go down a day or two earlier and stay at one of the Disney hotels using the fall room discount.

My question is, what is the best way to go about adding a room only reservation? Should I just book a separate stay or link it to my current reservation? I do not want to mess up my free dining. I am a worrier and just want to do it the best way.

Yes, you would book a room-only for the nights before your Free Dining stay. You can pick up your package tickets up to 3 days before your package begins, by visiting Guest Relations at the entry gate to one of the theme parks. Have your package info and ID with you. You cannot pick up your dining credits in advance. If you are staying at the same resort for both reservations, ask for the same room for both stays. You will have to check out - then check-in for the second reservation.

That usually happens. But there are rare times when it's not possible for Disney to do this. We've requested and received the same room for back-to-back reservations.
