Question about soup kitchens.

I was thinking about bringing over some food (pies or something) for a soup kitchen a few towns over from me. I've never done this before and I was wondering if they would even accept it.

Does anyone know if they have any restrictions? Or if they prefer people volunteering their time rather than giving food?

I have a phone number that I'll call after I leave work, but I figured someone here would know. Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but that's very generous of you!

I am guessing they probably wanted the food donations before today. They don't have time the eve of Thanksgiving to process hundreds of donations. And I am sure they are prepared for their Thanksgiving meal service by now.

You question reminded my of the TV show 'How I met your Mother' this week. They went to a soup kichen to volunteer for Thanksgiving, and they just laughed at them. It is the #1 volunteer day of the year. There was no room for them.

Thats kind of what I figured. I'm still going to call, see if they need anything. If not, I'm sure there are going to be places that need food next week, or the week after when all the volunteering stops.

I think that's a great idea. They probably will be in more need then anyways.

I'm not sure whether they would accept already prepared food. Liability issue if it is not safe. A donation of canned/unprepared food, time, money would probably be much more appreciated!

unless they are prepared in a commercial kitchen with a food label, they may not accept it. I know ours will only accept items made in a professional kitchen because of the liablity of it.

I agree! Whatever you would have spent on the food you would have prepared, instead make a cash donation. You can volunteer in a food pantry as well, they need volunteers year round.
