My husband and I are planning a trip to be staying on WDW campus, but because of our weight issues it's hard for us to walk long distances without near collapse. Do the Disney parks have the scooters we can rent? How does all that work?
Yes, you can rent scooters at the parks, but they are on a first come, first serve basis and they are more expensive than renting off-site.
I would suggest calling one of the companies listed in the disAbilities FAQ's sticky at the top of the forum and renting from one of them. This way you will also have a scooter for around the hotel and if you wanted to go to DownTown Disney.
If you look at the FAQ's sections it does a real nice job explaining how things work with scooters and wheelchairs.
One thing to know about scooters, is that they all have a weight limit for them. Most of them are good for up to 300 lbs, some will handle more than that, so this might be something you need to keep in mind.
As peerage mentioned, there is information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread. You can find that thread near the top of the thread list for this board or follow the link in my signature.
The information about scooter rental is in post #2 of that thread.

When we've rented scooters off-site, they discreetly ask our size range so they know what size scooter to take to our hotel. I end up with a 3-wheeler and DH gets a 4-wheeler with a sturdier frame and larger motor.
Another thing to consider -- it's easier to drive onto the monorail than onto a bus. And once you get onto the bus you have to parallel park the scooter and the driver will tie it down (think seat belts with grappling hooks.)
Because the buses are somewhat of a hassle (tho do-able) we prefer to stay at hotels where the monorail stops, which limits us to the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, or the Contemporary. Hey, any excuse for a deluxe hotel, say whut? We still have to take a bus to get to DTD, and the Animal Kingdom.
