We are going 1/1/12 through 1/7/12. I am planning on staying offsite. Usually I can find a room for less than $70 a night. All hotels that I look at are $90 and up (country inn and suites, hampton inn, pop century). Why is it so expensive this week. I planned on this week because I figured everybody would be going back to work and school after new years day. Do you think the rates will go down a little as it gets closer? I am one of those people who like to plan in advance and this is killing me. We like to stay in lake buena vista area and it is only two of us. Please give me your thoughts if you think the rates will go down and also why so much this week.

Plenty of schools don't start back up until January 7th, so it's essentially still peak season.

I'm there the week before you, and I managed to get the Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista for $60 a night on Booking.com, but that rate is long gone.

My advice is to book a non-prepaid, no cancellation-penalty room now (just so you have one), and then as it gets closer to your dates, keep your eye out for better deals, place some bids on Priceline, etc..

my kids go back Jan 9. Most schools give the kids 2 weeks for Christmas holidays. I don't think you will find too many discounts during the Christmas holiday period
