Hi!
Not sue if this is the right place or not. And if these answers are all in a specific thread somewhere then don't hesitate to direct me there, I did some searching on my own but couldn't find anything.
Anyway . . . .
How exactly does this work are the ressies in the DVC owners name? Is there problems at check in? What if I wanted to add DDP? I see that people use paypal for payment is this for just the rental fee or also the DDP as well? Could I add dining later on my own?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to this idea and would like to know all the facts before taking the plunge. Price wise for accomodations it seems a great way to go, am I wrong in thinking this??

TIA,
Stephanie

Read the sticky threads at the top of the Rent/Trade Board. They should give you lots of info.

This is an arrangement between you and an individual. Disney is not involved in any way. So if you have problems, it's between you and the owner. You cannot confirm the reservation and you cannot contact Member Services for any reason. The member sets the terms for payment. Some accept Paypal, some do not. Some require full payment to make the reservation, some will allow you to make an initial payment and payments.

If you choose to add the DDP to your reservation, the member has to add it to the reservation for you in advance and you pay when you check in and not before.

You can't expect to get a reservation any less than 7 months ahead of time. And even then, you may be too late to get exactly what you want. Most members make their reservations 11 months out.

Basically, you get a very nice vacation for not as much cash as you would pay Disney directly. But you give up any control over the reservation until the moment you check in.

THANK YOU! I looked over all the info, so I am to understand the actual check in will be in my name as if I am a guest of the DVC owner? Are most willing to have a written agreement? What if I only need around 50 points? Is that something people are will to do? Sorry, one more,;) Is there a list of reputable renters somewhere on the board?
Thanks again,
stephanie

The reservation will be in your name, but a guest of a DVC member is someone who has not paid the member any compensation for the reservation. Your reservation will be a rental and not as a guest. You will not be entitled to any DVC perks, but you will get the standard WDW resort perks.

Post your request on the R/T Board and wait for someone to contact you. Read the stickies about renting.

I'm curious. What are the differences (besides the obvious lack of money exchange)?

In reality none, but there are contractual differences. Contractually, the member is obligated to let Member Services know you are renting and not a guest (few do). Their are a few member perks that guests of members are supposed to be entitled to that renters are not entitled to.

You can have the person you are renting from add the DDp to your reservation but you will pay for it when you check in. It must be added at least 48 hours prior to check in and since you cannot contact member services yourself you will have to have the person you are renting from do it for you.

I there any difference between the dining plan through DVC and the one I would book in a traditional vaction package through Disney? Just trying to see the negatives in renting, so far I can't find any!:cool1:

No.

You may also want to review the [thread=1669863]Considering Renting from a DVC Member?[/thread] thread.

The only difference is for DVC there is no ticket/dining package. The DDP operates the same, and costs the same, but you purchase your park tickets separately. You don't even have to purchase them through Disney, you can use an authorized discounter, if you wish, or you can purchase them when you arrive at your resort, or pre-purchase from the Disney website.

If you read the renting advice threads the one thing that some people see to be as a negative is not having any control over the reservation except through the person you are renting from. If you talk to the person and get a good feeling about them from checking posts they may have made about other things than renting AND you can live with knowing you can't call about the reservation yourself you should be okay. The other thing is that most people who rent out their points have a no refund policy. Many, myself included do not work with a written signed contract but do spell out the terms clearly by email and phone so there are no misunderstandings about this. For example I have told renters that I will rebook if they have to cancel the original reservation IF there is availability for when they want to go or if they find someone to take their reservation I would change the names. For me this is because I only rent if I have points that will be lost if I don't use them or if we are doing a cruise or some other vacation and we use the money from the rental to pay for it. There are as many rental agreements as there are people making them and you may find that some of them are not acceptable for you so you need to do your research which you have a good start on already by asking your questions.
Just curious - where on eastern LI are you located? My family is from East Hampton.

There is no minimum stay requirement for DVC either. You must buy for everyone in your party and for every night of your stay, but if you are only staying one night, you can still get the DP or DDP for that one night.

You guys are so helpful, I really aprreciate it.
Still doinng research, have a tentative reservation for POP but if I can get a MUCH nicer spot for practically the same price I am going to cancel. I still have time for that.
Castleri- I grew up in Hampton Bays and now reside in East Quogue just about 8 miles from the rest of my family!! guess Im what you call a local yocal!!
