question about points

i received my book of information yesterday and was wondering about the points. i know the cost per point can go up as years pass, but what is the history on how many points are needed for a stay at dvc? the rates in the book are only for 2006,2007. do they usually increase the amount every year?

If I understand what you are asking. The number of pts for a room remains the same. If its 19 pts now it will always be 19 points for that room during that season(adventure, magic, premier,..etc..). They can shift the dates around meaning say Easter week was the 16th this year. That week was premier season for 2006. In 2008 it is March 23 so that will be a premier week.

They cannot change the total number of points for that room.

The total points owned at each resort are a finite number and cannot change. Points needed to stay for individual nights can change, as long as the total number is not changed - which means that if point needs for some nights are increased, other nights MUST be decreased to keep things in balance.

In practice, this has happened only once - at OKW in 1996. No reallocation has occurred at any resort since. (BWV did add the standard view early in it's sales, but no reallocation occurred at that time.) In 1996, some nights at OKW were increased a few points (mostly weeknites during Adventure season) and some nights were decreased (mostly weekend nights), but most had no change at all. Except for the specific dates of Thanksgiving and Easter each year, there have been no changes since at any DVC resort.

In the past, new point charts have usually been published in the fall each year for the DVC resorts. We should know the 2008 points by this October. Be aware that point costs for non-DVC options have no such protection and have often changed.

While I expect that no changes are likely in the near future, owners should be aware that it is possible and a provision for DVC to do this is in our contract documents.

That's not quite what Doc said. It is possible that the points required for Adventure season may change. IF they do, another will also change - in the reverse direction. The TOTAL number of points required for a unit - during the entire year - can NOT change. As Doc said, this has only occured once in DVC history. A minor 'tweeking'.

For example, they could raise Sun through Thursday nights by one point. Then they would have to lower Fri and Sat by a total of five points, maybe three on Fri and two on Sat.

If they decided to raise the points during Oct, they would have to lower the points during another part of the year.

If they decided to raise the number of points for OKW studios, they could lower the number of points for the grand villas.

So there is a finite number of points to be allocated for each resort. Whatever it takes each year has to be the same. The actual points per day or per villa could change.

When one goes up, another must come down.

They can even adjust the season. So something that may be in Adventure season today might be shifted to a different season. However, whatever shift they do make, they cannot change the TOTAL number of points for the TOTAL resort for the Full Year.

As mentioned, the only time they have ever reallocated points was for OKW in 1996. Here's the current point chart, by season, showing weekday/weekend points for each villa type. The numbers in parenthesis are the equivalent points prior to the 1996 change. That will give you an idea of how that reallocation occurred.
