Question about points each year...

I think I may have just realized something very important... lol

Does the number of points it costs per night never change after you buy DVC?

For example... I have a booklet here that says it's 13 points per night for a standard view studio at BLT January 1-31 in 2010. Will that always be the number of points after buying DVC? If you buy it this year I mean.

Is that what it's talking about when it says 'locked in' rates?

Okay... I just read another post that talked about the points being reallocated, but the total number of points staying the same. I think I understand that... But the bit about new DVC resorts being added is a little confusing. How does that work? Could that possibley allow for all the current points per night to go up?

I have so many questions!!!

The total points at a resort will stay the same. However, within that total number of points they can change -- this year and last year, DVC changed the charts a bit. Mainly weekend nights went down in points and weekday nights went up. So it's not fixed as in "March 1-8 will ALWAYS cost me XX points", but over a week, it shouldn't be much different.

The new resorts seem to be more points-expensive. So it's more expensive to stay a week at BLT than in a comparable room at OKW.

Hope that helps a bit.

Oh! That was a great help! Thank you so much!

I was getting a headache just thinking about the poor soul who had to switch around the points for all the resorts together each year. lol

The way that I see it is yes the points can change.

If you have a certain time of year that you like to vacation at WDW, the possibility exists that Disney could change the number of points required for your stay. The fact that my increase is offset by a decrease somewhere else doesn't help me a bit.

We are now short around 35 points due the Disney's changes.

I really appriciate all this info! Thank you so much!

So the week you like to vacation could go up, while another week could go down at the same resort? Is that it?

Yes exactly!! Or, the points within a week may change from year to year. For example, with the latest reallocation, Disney made Friday/Saturday nights "cost" a few less points and spread the difference by increasing the Sunday-Thursday requirements. It is always recommended that you buy 10-20 more points than you actually need in order to give you a cushion in case of unfriendly fluxuations. :thumbsup2

The thing I didn't know about before this year's reallocation was that points could move between room sizes. So all studios could go up and all the grand villas could go down. It's just the total of all the rooms for all the nights in a year has to even out.

And, they can rearrange the seasons as well. For example, early Dec is still in Adventure season (lowest points), but yet it is a high demand time for DVC.

There is nothing from stopping DVC from making this time of year a different season--they would simply have to replace it with some other time.

We travel during Magic season right now (2nd to highest in terms of points needed) so for us, most of the changes have run in our favor. But, those that travel during those lower point seasons are finding themselves needing to adjust.
