question about PIN codes and promotions

Just wondering about the PIN codes everyone talks about. Do they get mailed to you, or emailed? Is it just "luck of the draw" in getting one? If you do get one, how far in advance do they usually send them out? We've planned a September-October 2012 trip again with the free dining offer, but our original choice was to go late November, early December to see the Christmas decor. We switched to Sept because of the dining offer. We'd change our dates if a new promo came out for Nov/Dec, but if I was to be lucky enough to get a PIN code for a promo in November, when would I likely receive it? We are hoping for free dining again, with our original dates of November/Dec

I received my first real pin code (I'd received other "pins" before that were just postcards with the same offers available to the general public.

It seems very much like the luck of the draw, though I had saved some vacations I'd priced out for the fall and those were the dates the pin was available for. Could be a reason, it may not be. We'll never know.
