Question about new eyeglasses...

So, on Tuesday, I picked up my new glasses. I've only worn glasses for two years and have worn the same lenses the entire time.

My prescription obviously changed quite a bit because my new glasses are seriously different. I'm getting a terrible "fish bowl" effect and having trouble judging distances. They've also put something called a prism on my left lens to correct a problem in that eye.

I woke up this morning and immediately fell forward. The entire world appeared to be on a forward tilt and I had a hard time getting a center of balance. It took me several minutes to be able to walk without support (I was holding to the walls and to the kitchen counter). It really shook me up, and this was even before I put my glasses on.

Has anyone else had any problems like this? I knew it would take time to adjust to wearing the glasses, but this weird "dizziness" (and it wasn't really dizzy, exactly - more like a complete loss of balance) was completely unexpected.

I've put my old glasses on and am much better, but I am still a little off center.

I'm going to go to the doctor tomorrow but I'm not sure if I should call the eye doctor or my GP about this. :confused3

Anyone else have such problems with a new set of glasses?

DS just recently had this problem when his script changed a lot. His astigmatism got worse. First, I would suggest having your eye doctor check to make sure the glasses were made correctly. I did that and they were. Looking at my son I realized that the frames across his eyes were at an angle instead of straight up and down. He went back and had the glasses adjusted which helped. Good luck.

I've been wearing glasses since second grade and a new prescription always takes a bit of getting used to, but what you're experiencing sounds excessive to me. I'm usually adjusted to the new glasses after an hour or two, and I've never fallen or been so dizzy I couldm't stand up. Good luck.:)

I have worn glasses most of my life. About 6 years ago, I had a very similar problem after getting my new ones. It's hard to describe but it seemed like everything was off. I went back several times to get them "adjusted". I finally got a tech that understood what I was telling her. After she looked at the glasses, she said that the lenses weren't cut correctly. She said that if it's even a little off center when they're cut, it will throw the entire lens off. She ordered new lenses and cut them herself when they came in and these were perfect.

I would go back and explain the problem and ask them to double check that the lenses were cut correctly.

I have a very strong prescription so even a little bit off makes a huge difference.

I had a similar problem once. I knew immediately that something was wrong but they eye glass place insisted that I just needed to get used to them. Every time I turned my head I felt sick to my stomach. I went back the next day and they kept telling me the same thing. After the 3rd trip back I started making a stink about not getting anywhere with this. They finally took me into the office to talk with the "manager". I told her what was wrong and she said the same thing. I demanded that they check the glasses-which they would NOT up until this point. It turned out that they had the axis wrong--they had copied it wrong from the prescription to the order form. After about 3 weeks of getting the wrong prescription, wrong GLASSES, BREAKING my glasses, etc. I never even got one word of an apology, nothing.

It does sound like the prescription may be wrong (or transposed). It's best to have it checked to make sure it's right.

I had the same problem with my last prescription glasses. I can't wear them at all because they are too strong; in fact, I feel drunk when I put them on. The eye doctor told me he wrote the prescription wrong the first time, but the second prescription was way off, too. The place that made my glasses would not re-do them again. So, I paid $150 (after insurance paid their portion) for glasses I can't wear. I only get one paid eye exam a year with my insurance, so I will now have to pay out of pocket and start over. I have been wearing my old glasses to get by on for now. So frustrating.

I had that problem when they first started to put a prism in my glasses to correct an astigmatism, my eyes saw double and the prism stops that. When I put them on I assumed it was a new prescription I had to get used to it. After 15 minutes of everything being really off I went right back. They had put the lenses in wrong. The left eye had the right eye's glass and vice versa. It could be something as simple as that. Take them back and tell them the problem you are having. They should correct it right away. Wearing the wrong prescription gives me horrible migraines.
