I don't mean for this to turn into a debate about ANTHING, but I'm just wondering.....

I work with a lot of peoples names, I never see these people, just their names. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of Hispanics have more than one last name, even the guys, and I'm just wondering why? Is it for religious reasons, or are they trying to keep their mothers maiden name in their name, or something like that?

TIA

Hmmm.....I havent noticed that. And I married a Hispanic guy. No one in their very large family has more than one last name.

well living here in latin america i have noticed that thye use both last name
dad and mom's thats the way the ID's are the passports everything.. so maybe they're just use to it:confused3

It is a very deep cultural thing...

Here is a link that I found explaining it when I googled:
Spanish Surnames

Here is something posted from the article:
Take as an example the name of Teresa García Ramírez. Teresa is the name given at birth, García is the family name from her father, and Ramírez is the family name from her mother.

I've heard in really traditional families that they can have up to 4 last names, because it includes all of the grandparents' names as well.... like this:
Theresa Garcia-Mendez Ramirez-Vega
where "Garcia" is the paternal grandfather, "Mendez" is the paternal grandmother, "Ramirez" is the maternal grandfather, and "Vega" is the maternal grandmother.

Did I make that clear as mud? :goodvibes

DH & I joked that we were going to name our kids that way. Can you imagine the last name of "Muñoz-Martinez Balch-Arnold" strapped on my kids? :lmao:

In Chile and most of South America, all people have two last names (and it's actually a problem for those of us who don't...we always run into problems with databases). The 'first' last name is the paternal last name of the father; the 'second' last name is the paternal last name of the mother.

So, if Jorge Reyes Seguel marries Maria Perez Pinera, then their child would be named "First Name" Reyes Perez.

As a side note, many people choose to use only the paternal last name in everyday life (i.e., "First Name" Reyes, according the above example), but their official documents would still have both last names.

Op,
Are you just talking about Hispanic men? Because I know a lot of women keep their maiden names and add their dh's name, with or without a hyphen. I did that. I dropped my middle name, changed it to my maiden name then added dh's last name. I happen to be hispanic, but that had nothing to do with my decision. I did it because I liked my maiden name and couldn't see dropping it. Now I wish I would have just dropped my maiden name. Oh well.

As for a cultural thing, dh is also hispanic and he only has one last name. One thing that I notice in his family is that no one has a middle name. They have a first and last name only.

No, I'm not talking about just men, I just mentioned men because its not usual for men (in my ethnicity) to keep their "maiden name" and spouces last name.

Totally OT, but I saw Roger Dautlry last night in concert!!! He ROCKED and I would give my left arm for The Who to go out on tour again soon. I only mention this because your avitar is my first love, Keith Moon. To bad he died before I was born.....

I saw on ESPN that The Who (what's left of them) are supposed to perform at the Super Bowl! I hope they are right. At least there will be no chance of an exposed breast on that show. LOL!

Hmmm, I really don't know anyone with 2 last names on either side of our families (except for me). But then again, my ancestors imigrated here long ago. I think I'm 4 generation here in the U.S. Dh is 2nd generation, but only one last name. Like I said, the unique thing with his family is no middle name. I thought that was kind of strange. This sounds like it happens in foreign countries and not so much here in the U.S.

I can't wait!
