my husband bought me a canon power shot SX10IS last christmas, and for the life of me i just can't figure it out! i have tried to read the book but seriously it is not written in "red neck talk" and I am having a hard time with it!!!

I just want to know if this is a good camera, and if there were any sites that would help me learn how to put it and it's many features to good use???

I am leaving for WDW in about a week and want to take some awesome pics! So please all of ya'll amazing photographers.........this is an SOS!!

Your best course of action may be to shoot in automatic in broad daylight and hope for the best.

It is going to be difficult to learn a camera AND basic photography skills in a week.

However, you can attempt a short course for your camera:

http://www.shortcourses.com/store/canon-sx10is.html

These are step by step instructions to familiarize yourself with your camera's capabilities. If you do this now and spend 5-6 hours going through the course, you will have some hands-on experience and you might do better.

If you really are in the dark about using it, your best bet will be to leave it set to the green AUTO setting. That should work for you in most situations. Of course, in tricky lighting, it will have problems. But if you don't know how to adjust it, it will probably do as well as you would.

You probably don't have time now, but in the future, get yourself a good book on basic photography or do some study on the internet. There's a lot of good info out there. And, most of all, get out and experiment! Once you learn the basics, you'll have some idea of what you want to achieve and how to get there.

It looks like your camera has a lot of the settings of a DSLR, so most info on using a DSLR would also apply to your camera.

thanks guys! i knew that i would get some great info from ya'll! i have set around and played with it for hours at a time taking a picture of one object and trying out different settings...........and granted i have figured out a few things just not everything i am trying to get it to do!

Post a picture that didn't turn out the way you wanted and we can provide direct feedback.

Your camera is a very capable one and will take very good pictures just in Auto mode (green box on the main dial) ... it also has a whole slew of "scene" modes (a little further on the main dial) like "Night Portrait" or "Aquarium" ... just pick the scene mode that matches what you're trying to take pictures of an you'll get a lot more "keepers".

Make sure you have lots of extra memory cards and take extra shots. The more pics you take the more likely you are to get good ones. Make sure you have extra batteries charged and ready.

If you have the time and the inclination to learn about photography, a great on-line course can be found here: www.GoingManual.com.

After reading through/downloading the pages of this site, you'll begin learning how ISO, aperture and shutter speed work together to properly expose a picture.

You will then have a background for learning to use the P, Av, Tv and M modes on your camera (also on the main dial). Using these modes takes more knowledge than the auto modes, but you can get great results once you understand what your camera is doing....
