Question about journaling

In the past, I only wrote titles or what I could print with my cricut in my scrapbooks. I wanted to add more and tell more of a story. So, I started journaling on my pages about a year ago. I like that I can add so much more to the pictures. I normaly handwrite on the page or on a tag. However, I have been looking online at some page layouts and I noticed that some people type their journal boxes. My question is this. If you type yours, do you just type it and print it or is there a special way that you go about it? (Hope my question make sense). Thanks so much in advance. :)

If I am typing I will type enough to fill a whole page before printing. I normally will use columns as I like thinner journalling but that is just a personal preference.

If I type mine, I use 8 1/2 x 11 white cardstock....will type it in smaller box shapes apprx 2x3, 3x3, etc, depending on how much I am journaling, and what size of journal box fits in the LO...

so this is how I
would type it and
then it would not
be all stretched out
across the page

I do both, handwriting and typing. I always create my layout first and see how big my space is that I have to journal on (I have a tendency to put a lot of pictures on layouts because I take too many photos!! So I always create my layout before I type) . So if I have a 3x2 space or an odd sized 5x2 space to fill, I type my info to fit that space (My older microsoft word had inches on the side, the new updated one doesn't:scared1:). If I have already created the layout too then I know what color of cardstock to print on, etc. I also like vellum too. This is how I found that works for me because it all fits together nicely then at the end.

I posted a few examples below. I know I am a visual person so I thought it might be easier to see what I mean.

I created the layout and knew I didn't have much space, so I made the font smaller and watched my spacing.

Or this one I had more room, but knew the the exact size it needed to be to squeeze into my spot. Printed it on cream to match.

This one, I even printed on orange to add a little more color.

I often create a few layouts and then go back to do the typing all at once. I even found that I could use scraps by taping the scrap where I needed it on a piece of paper and running it through the printer that way. Great way to use up paper : ) Then I could do several prints at once by taping a few scraps and spacing it out : ) Hope this makes sense and hope this helps.

Thanks for the post, OP! I have a question about typing journaling, too. Whenever I print on cardstock the words don't seem to "stick." What I mean is, the ink sort of brushes off the cardstock paper. I use a laser printer and assumed with that they would "stick" better, but maybe I should try the inkjet? Am I the only one this happens to?

yes, it does, you can toggle it on and off, or you may have it turned off...

on the right hand side, right above the page slider-thingie, and right below the "ribbon" tool bar.

HTH!

One thing I always remember is that word or excel may come out with a new version, and it may do more, but they won't get rid of something existing. you just have to find it.:)

Thank you! I am still learning this version of word and that will help me a lot! Thank you!

I would try with an ink jet. I have never had this happen. I do have to be careful with vellum that it is dry before I move it. I will usually will do my layout also before my journeling. I will set the text box size then journel adjusting my font till I get it just right. Usually I will just use 1/2 sheet of 8 1/2x11. Paper I will usually use smooth card stock either matching a color in the layout or if I use white/cream then I match the ink match.

My handwriting is not the neatest so I perfer to type. Not to mention I am a horrible speller and spell check is my hero.

I've gone ahead and gotten my handwriting made into a font. It has been a huge timesaver - and I love that while printed, it's still MY writing.

I'm left handed - so hand-writing on the page always made me nervous. One false move and I've got smeared ink (lefties know what I mean!). :scared1:

While I always write on a separate piece being placed in, it's still distressing to have to redo it.

As far as WHAT I print on - I usually do either a light-weight cardstock on a solid ink printer. These have no trouble "sticking" since it's melted wax. ;) Plus it looks really cool.

Otherwise, I love printing on transparencies - and then using brads or eyelets to attach it (again using my own font/writing). It goes with any color scheme that way.

In some instances (like sentimental moments in my children's scrapbooks)I prefer my own handwriting, otherwise I like to type. I put my pics on the page and then decide the size of my journaling box, just like others do. I like to use fonts that match the theme of the page (such as the fonts that match the different areas/attractions of Disney).

Boy do I feel dumb! I always type my journaling but never thought to tape scraps on a piece of paper. Thanks! :)

How did you get your handwriting made into a font??

I bought a box of cream "parchment" paper - I think it's made for resumes. First I print it on regular printer paper to check the format and for spacing. Then I use repositionable adhesive to adhere the square of cream paper over the printing on the printer paper - then I *know* my scrap will be in the right place.

This is almost EXACTLY what I do! ................P

I used to type my journaling. I'd prepare the page first and add the journaling last so I can print it out in the correct size to fit the space. I would print on cardstock which I would cut to size or into strips and sometimes right on the page.

I type up my journeling, generally. I used to handwrite, but I am a horrible speller. I would have to check spelling all the time, and my MIL would still point out spelling mistakes I made.

So - I type up my journelling. I print on cardstock - normally white or offwhite, depending on the paper I've used. I may mat it, or else put it directly on the page (again, depending on the layout). Sometimes, I'll use brads or ribbons around it.

Sorry that it took me so long to get back to everyone that posted, but I wanted to give a BIG thank you for all the ideas and suggestions that you gave. I have some ideas spinning around in my head and I will be sure to put them to use soon. :goodvibes
