Question about job interviews-

DH sent his resume into a company and they emailed him asking for his salary requirements before they proceed and DH emailed this back to them that he would accept any reasonable offer and that he was looking forward to working on that particular project.

All books and other resources that offer interview advice say do NOT give them a number.

Well, she replied back that she really needs a number before she can proceed.

Is this standard? Does it sound weird to you? Would you send a number?

They do it sometimes. In this case, just send in what he'd like to make (within reason), and make sure to note that everything's negotiable.

My husband was forced into this too, and it actually ended up working.

Since the company is in contact with your husband, he may want to ask, "What is the salary range?" for the company. It's easier to negotiate when you have that information.

I would send it in if they have asked. They must have a set budget and if your husband's request is out of their ball park then they know not to call. That being said make sure that he does not price him self out of the job.

He went ahead and sent in a range, a little lower than what he actually would take. It is actually higher than his current salary, but he gets 20% bonuses every year.

I hope that is not being dishonest.

I don't think that is dishonest at all. He was asked his salary requirement, not what his current salary is...

I know at our office they request a salary range - it is to avoid what was mentioned above. They don't want to waste your time (or their time) interviewing someone who is out of their ballpark of salary. I am glad they do it. I went on an interview recently. After almost an hour she indicated the salary range for the position. It was about 1/2 what I currently make, a cut I can't afford to take even for the perfect job. We would not be able to live in our house and pay for the childcare we would need. On the bright side, I was told if a position opened up that was in my range they would call me - so maybe it wasn't a waste afterall...
