Question about husbands metal!

Just this past May my husband broke his ankle in hockey. Needless to say, they had to put a metal piece in the ankle to hold it together. Do I need to get a note from his physician about that for the airport? Has anyone heard of this? Friends of ours told us we might need a note so he doesn't set the metal detectors off!!
One more thing to do before we leave!!

I broke my ankle a couple years back and also had a ton of plates and screws in my ankle (I had everything taken out later). I went on a casino cruise out of FL and had no problems getting thru security. I have also traveled via air and had no problems, just in case though I did have a doctors note.
