I have been going to the salon and coloring my hair since the begginnig of the year. I first started out as a red head and decided I wanted to change back to my regular hair color, so my stylist turned my hair black (to take out the red) which is 3 shades darker then my normal hair color. According to her, I can't go back to my normal hair color. She says to keep the black color and keep touching it up. What! And keep going to the salon to upkeep a color at $100 every visit? (Includes cut & shammpoo. I go to an upscale salon, don't know why really!)That's getting to expensive for me...

Going to the salon is killing my pocket book, are there any hair coloring products over the counter that correct hair color? Or should I just go to the store and pick out a color that's closest to my natural hair color and chance it?

BTW, my natural hair color is a dark brown.

Thanks for any suggestions! :)

I used to have a lot more red in my hair and if you are a shade of brunette you can go back, but at this point, I am not sure what you can do! Hopefully one of our resident stylists can help you out. I will tell you that I got my hair to its natural hair color by getting a combination of a dye closer to my hair and then using toner to get the red out. Two times and it is near perfect. I have naturally med-dk brown hair and the only time I went black was as a temp and the last time my hair go too dark (switched stylists after it came out almost black... one shade off) they had to professionally remove the color and then re-dye the hair. Good luck!!!!

What you need is a new stylist. Actually, a colorist. You need to find someone who does corrective coloring because your stylist has made a mess for you. Good luck to you!

I used to dye my hair red (I mean fire engine red)and when I wanted to change it the stylist stripped the color out. It turned a funky yellow color but it faded shortly after and I was able to dye it any shade I wanted without red showing through. Now if I want it red I only use a subtle wash out dye.
I agree that you should get a second opinion.
