I am a DVC member, with SSR as my home resort. In the past I have rented a car. This past summer I used the ME and see no reason to rent a car anymore, except for grocery shopping.

I will be heading down (there will be 6 of us - ranging in age from 20-28)to SSR in March and am curious to know what everyone thinks is the best method for food shopping, including alcohol. For the most part, we will only be eating breakfast and snacks in the room.

Should I get a taxi (how much do they cost?) to take me to one of the local supermarkets? Or, just get the necessities we need at The Artist's Palette's grocery store?

Also, does anyone have a price list (other than the one on the DVC website) of the items at The Artist's Palette, including the wine, beer, liqour and refillable mugs?

You are so close to "town" when you stay at SSR I would just take a taxi. It couldn't be more than a mile or two down the road to the grocery store, drug store, liquor store, Dunkin Donuts, etc, etc. ;) We always go there to get our supplies. Gotta have those donuts!!! :rotfl:

Thanks. We typically go to "town" to get the groceries too. Have not done that without a car though.
Any idea about the prices of taxis, and prices of alcohol at The Artist's Palette?

Another option you may want to consider is pre-ordering with one of the grocery delivery services. We plan to use wegoshop.com for our next trip in November.

I have read only positive reviews about wegoshop. They shop at the store of your choice (Publix, Winn Dixie, Walmart, etc.) and deliver to your room and add a reasonable delivery fee. I would bet the delivery fee is less than a taxi and you don't spend your time grocery shopping.

Good luck.

If you go to the Mears website, under taxis, there's a fare estimator that will give you a good idea of the fare between any two points.

I just came back and my DH and I spend $30 on (2) 6-packs of beer :drinking1 at Artist's Palette ....I'd buy it elsewhere if possible:mad: . Those beer prices were outrageous. (But everything else about SSR was GREAT!)

I agree that SSR is great. We only stay there or at one of the Epcot Resorts. But $30 for (2) six packs?!?! That is ridiculous!

$30 may seem out of line, but you need to remember that it is:mickeyjum beer. :rotfl:

We usually do a one day rental to get groceries. You can pick up and return a Alamo or National car at the Dolphin, Car Care Center (who picks you up at your resort), or the Buena Vista Palace. Avis is at the DD Hilton, and Budget is at the Doubletree Guest Suites. We prefer shopping at Publix, since the prices are cheaper than Goodings and the produce seems a bit fresher also. We are used to very good produce here in California and we have found Publix to be the closest to what we are used to. We usually have a meal offsite also, since there are plenty of good, cheaper restaurants outside Disney.

We've used gardengrocer.com twice during SSR. Very easy! There is a $10 delivery fee for a min. $50 order. Both times we pre-paid by cc so the delivery could be left with bell services. We like to get right to MK.:) We did not purchase alcohol, but I think you can if you call the company.

If your delivery is left w/bell services-what happens with the perishible items (meats, eggs, frozens etc) ?

Perishable items are kept in the refrigerator by Bell Services. Frozen food is kep in the freezer. Been there, done that etc.

Personally, we were not impressed by the groceries available at SSR.

We used wegoshop and plan to use them again. Worked out wonderfully-- the cost was small in terms of the time saved, especially not having to shop in an unfamiliar store layout. Also caused to us to plan and think through what we would buy and what we would bring. If we did our own grocery run we might just buy things on the fly and probably end up with too much.
