Question about Fort Wilderness cabins

Hi everyone! I've never stayed at Ft Wilderness, but I am thinking about trying a cabin for my family of 4 (me, DH, DD's 6 and 3). I've visited many times and love the laid back atmosphere.

My question is this - in all of the photo's online I have seen, the cabins seem dark, cramped and somewhat "dated". Does it really FEEL like cabin?

Can someone who has stayed there comment?

Thanks in advance!

I'll give it a whirl.

They are not "really" cabins, per se, they are like mobile homes, with log-like siding put on them. The inside is fairly 'rustic' but I did not think that they were particularly dark, and they were absolutely NOT cramped. I think it would be perfect for your family size. We were myself, DH, and DS (age 6).

There is a back bedroom with a double bed, and bunkbeds, full size bathroom, full size kitchen, with a table. Living room with a love seat, and a Murphy bed that pulls down from the wall. When the bed is down, the living room is totally taken up by it, but otherwise, there is plenty of room.

There is also a nice sized deck with a picnic table.

The best part for us, was being able to put DS to bed in the bedroom, and not have to sit in a quiet, dark hotel room while he slept. And having breakfast in, every morning. Saved time and money. We had a couple of lunches in, and a couple of dinners, and the added hotel price was made up by what we saved by not having to eat out 3 meals a day.

Any other specific questions, feel free to ask, or check out some of the cabin threads on the Camping board.

I agree with Debster - We thought the cabins were perfect for WDW trips when our DS was young. Plenty of room & some privacy for us after he went to sleep. We haven't stayed in them since 1998, but they weren't dated then (of course, they had just all been switched over from "homes" to "cabins" around that time, but the homes were nice too)

I really think FW Cabins are the best value, most overlooked accommodations in WDW. I highly recommend them to families with young kids.

The cabins are awesome. They are not dated. As stated above, they are more like mobile homes.
Make sure to rent a golf cart. makes it easier to get around since cars are not allowed in all areas.
One of the best features with Fort Wilderness is the transportation. All you need to do is hop on a boat to the MK and you can get anywhere. It's never crowded.
We also loved the tons of children activites.

Hi. I agree with the other posters that the cabins are nice and a good deal. (i just got a quote for $180 night in April with AP discount) I too would recommend renting a golf cart b/c the cabins are a little ways from the main areas and its fun to roam around the campgrounds in the cart. It's a little pricey, but I think worth it. You can also bring bikes if you are driving.

We have stayed in them 3 times.
They have suited our needs at that particular time.
I have 3 kids.
We stayed there twice becuase we were bringing a babysitter with us. That gave the babysitter the murphy bed and we stayed in the back bedroom. It was perfect.
We also stayed there in March because we were doing a magical gatherings and we had 2 cabins next to eachother to accommodate everyone. They again were perfect for our needs, but as soon as the extended family left and our family was all by ourselves, we moved over to the Beach Club.

It depends on your needs.
If you have a napping child/baby, the cabins are so nice because you can sit out on your deck while they nap or watch TV or whatever.

They are a bit dark inside but you're in the woods!!

Sound like they'd be perfect for you and your family.

We've stayed in them, too, and they are very nice. However, they are fairly remote. You'll been very lucky if you can walk to the store, pool, or boat launch. Most times you'll need to ride a bus (or pay-up and rent a golf cart) to get most places.

For about the same money, we stay at WL, now. Everything is very convenient--a short walk to anything. Also, you can get a fridge in your room so you can make sandwiches and such.

I know many, many people love the cabins. If you want piece and quiet at the end of the day--cabins are great. Also, the cabins are much bigger than most resort rooms. So, if feeling cramped is a concern, the cabins will be a better option. Also, you can park right next to them if you drive--that's nice.

We stayed in a FW cabin last summer and it was kind of tight. THey told us it sleeps 6 but we were snug just the 4 of us. It was only one night so it was fine, and it was nice having a kitchen. But if we had to do it again, considering the price we had to pay (this was the night of July 4th), we would just stay at a value resort. Maybe 2 adults and 2 kids would be better, we were 4 adults.
