I am new to formal night since our first cruise was a 4 night. I was wondering what they consider formal dress? Does that mean floor length, knee length or what I am totally lost. I have a black short dress for the semi but don't know what to get for the formal. I don't have any occasions around here to wear formal dresses so I am trying to stick to something I will wear again and that is not too expensive. Any help here? Thanks a bunch!

Pretty much anything relatively dressy works. I wore a black glittery shell/jacket combo over dressy black slacks. You see all different degrees of "formal", short skirts, long skirts, slacks and some people don't even dress up as it is a 'suggestion', only.

my view/take is...something you'd wear to an evening wedding would be formal. so i've looked at a dress, and think would i wear this to a wedding? of course, i'd rather be in shorts & flip flops! :flower:

Sorry for jumping on this thread but I had another question about formal wear. Does your dress have to be black in color to be considered formal? Is any color exceptable? :confused3

Went on 4 nt. in June.
There isn't a "formal" night such as on the 7 day Magic.
Monday is "dress-up night" per the Navigator. It was basically "anything goes". I saw lots of suits (DH wore one) and some of everything else. I saw ladies in evening gowns, sundresses, skirts and sweaters (that was me), capris, you name it. Just be yourself and have fun!!!

On the Magic I saw several ladies in "gowns" and others - my Mom and Aunt included in nice "Sunday" clothes. I wore a glittery shell and sweater and some black jersey slacks.

I just bought a white and silver shell and jacket with black palazo pants to wear to my son's wedding. Will change the pants for a velvet skirt for the wedding but commented to DH when I was showing him the outfit that it would be PERFECT for our next cruise. His comment was ..."mmmm, I kinda expected that!!!"

I wore some strappy sandals for formal night and didn't take a SINGLE pair of hose on the ship. Summer=hot, hot+hose=BAAAADDD.

Thank you so much for the replies! Now I have an idea of what to get. I think I will stick to the idea about what I would wear to a wedding, that way I can get some more use out of it. To everyone HAPPY CRUISING!!
