Question about Florida/other states toll roads?

We're driving from Illinois. Do the Florida toll roads work the same? (if you're familiar with IL tolls?)

In Florida can you drive through the 'cash' lane and just pay the attendant or throw your change in a thing? Does paying tolls work differently in Florida?

Some parts of FL tollroads, but not in the Orlando area, are cashless. Drivers who don't have a transponder are billed the cost of the toll and a service fee. I think It's called something like plate pass. Picture of license plays is used for billing

All Toll Roads around Orlando have a cash lane. There are a few exits though that are Sunpass only, and a GPS will still tell you to get off at one, and it will not tell you if it is Sunpass only. I have been in my car that does not have a Sunpass on it, forgot I was in that car, and went through the tolls.. no bills sent in the mail, but if a cop happened to see it he could pull you over. The only exit I can think of right now that is Sunpass only is Consulate Drive, off of Florida Turnpike.. which you may take if you were going to SeaWorld or some I-Drive hotels.

Thanks guys! So..if you go through a Sunpass only lane, and you don't have a sunpass, will you get billed in the mail? or do you need to pay online(thats how it is in IL)

I have gone through at least 4 times that I know of.. and my parents have twice. It has been 8 months and nothing has happened. A light blinks if you go under the toll without paying.. I would assume a cop would see the light and pull you over. No cop has been around when we accidentally went under and we have nothing in the mail. If it is a sunpass only exit... it clearly states it miles before the exit too.

I dont remember if you said you were renting a car... but a lot of rental companies will ask if you want a sunpass. You may pay a little for it up front (my in laws got one and they just paid when they returned the car since the pass kept track of their toll amounts), but it will save you time - you wouldnt think it but stopping at every toll does add up... but also if you use Sunpass it is like ten percent off at every toll. If you are not renting a car, but using your own, you can buy them at grocery stores.

Paying tolls works fundamentally the same way. There are full service lanes, transponder-only lanes, and exact change lanes and some lanes that accept more than one of the preceding. But there are a few exits in Florida (also in New Hampshire) that have tolls but no attendant to make change.

The Illinois transponder is honored in Maine and all points in between, but not in Florida. Anyone can get a Florida transponder.
