question about expiring points

my parents are dvc members and my father asked me to find out more about renting and transfering points. i figured i would find out a little more about expiring points and how it worked before we tried to rent/transfer. their home resorts are okw and ssr. looking at their point detail it appears that they both have an oct use year. apparently, there are 32 ssr points remaining from oct 05 use year and only 1/4 can be banked at this point by the end of the month. my question is- can they make a ressie for sometime later than oct 1 using the remaining points or do they lose them completely if they are not actually "used" before then? i guess my next question would be- if it isn't possible, when would my parents have to rent or transfer by? thanks for the help.

I think I know what you are asking...If your parents have 32 points left in 2005 use year, can they be banked into the 2006 year... It seems like it is the 1/4 thing that may confuse you? That's 1/4 of their SSR contract (150, 200, 300, etc points per year) that they purchased. If their SSR annual contract is 128 points or more, then they can be banked into 2006 SSR. If their contract is less than that, up to 1/4 of their annual SSR point allotment can be banked into 2006. EX: SSR annual contract is 100 pts, then 25 can be banked. If the previously mentioned example were the case, then 7 points would not be able to be banked and could be either rented or transferred to another DVC member.

Since there are only 2 months left before Oct 1, should they need to rent the points, I think it might be best for your folks to lock in on ANY studio reservation available, at any DVC resort at WDW, then rent the confirmed reservation rather than messing with trying to lock in on a renter's desired dates of stay.

Just my $.02--and possibly worth less than that! :cool1:

No, you can't do that. Use year applies to the dates the points are used, not when the ressie is made. Those points expire on 9/30/06 if not used or banked.

If you can bank, that is by far your best option. Renting is a very tricky thing to do this late in your use year...especially if they don't already know the ropes.

On banking, the banking deadline %s are cumulative. So, if they have already banked some points, they may have already have banked more than 25% and may not be able to do any additional banking. OTOH, I believe the %s apply to the entire account (assuming both contracts are in the same account), so it would be 25% of their total number of points for the year, not just the SSR points.

You'd have call MS to find out exactly what their options are. If you do that, it would be good to have one of your parents on the line if you're not on the account. MS probably will not give you account info if you are not on the account. They should not let you do any transactions, like banking, if you are not on the account.

As Jim explained, the banking percentage applies to the total number of points owned in a single account (which is under a single membership number)

If they have for example 150 OKW points, and 50 SSR Add-On points, then their total contract is 200 points.

25% of 200 is 50. If they haven't previously banked any points, then at the 25% window they're allowed to bank up to 50 points. Thus they can bank all 32 remaining SSR points.

However, if they already have banked ANY points, then those points are included and applied toward the 50 point 25% maximum.

Suppose they've already banked 100 OKW points. Then they couldn't bank any of the remaining SSR points as they would already have more than 50 points banked.

Suppose they have already banked 25 OKW points. Then they could only bank an additional 25 points (for a total of 50), thus could not bank 7 of the SSR points.

And, as stated, if they haven't banked anything at all from either contract, then they can still bank all 32 SSR points.

So, in their case, add together the total number of points they own at OKW and SSR, take 25% of that number, and that's how many cumulative points may be banked at this time.

Hope this helps

thanks! i appreciate all your help. i looked online today and it says they are able to bank 30 points (they own 120 at ssr). the 175 pts for bcv (not okw which i had thought b/c that is where they always stay) have been used. i think i am very slowly getting this dvc stuff. i'm going to call my dad now so he can call ms. thanks again!

If those two holdings are in the same account -- and if they have banked 41 or fewer points so far this use year -- you can bank all 32.

I'd be willing to bet they are the same account -- looks to me like a 175 BCV purchase and then one of the SSR 120-pt add-on promotions. If that's the case, it's all one account.
