Hello -
We've seen the videos on YouTube.

I've read quite a few posts - but my 7-yr old DD is still worried :guilty: about this on our trip in Nov. She wants to know what happens when the train is going backwards in the dark after the rise to where the track is out. She doesn't really like steep straight drops. Is this portion of the ride a straight drop? fast? twisty? hilled? upside down? Any help would be good.

I think someone posted a link to a site that had a graphical simulation of EE - I saw it once and it had this feature that if you removed the various layers - like if you removed the mountain from the picture, you could see how the ride went while in the mountain. I've lost that link and have had the darndest time finding it.

Any help would be appreciated!

The dark part only drops straight back until you get back inside the mountain (only the length of the car, really), then it sweeps up, and to the left. It's not very fast, but it seems like it is because it's dark. (If you are riding on a sunny day and in the front, though, you can actually see the superstructure of the mountain and you can tell that it's not actually going as fast as it feels.)

My nine year old is a thrill seeker - you can't use her as a guideline at all. She loves rockin' rollercoaster, laughs through Tower of Terror, and rode Space Mountain over and over when she was six. Want to know the thing at Disney that scared her? The Jungle Boat after dark. Does that make any sense?

But Anna, my 14 year old, is a total chicken - she still flat out refuses to ride the more intense Mission: Space.

Anna loved Expedition Everest - she says it is like the Matterhorn (Disneyland) and Big Thunder Mountain. It is more fun than intense. There are some drops, a little bit of dark, and there is the backward aspect. No upside down anything.

I do have one tip - if your daughter decides to ride, have her sit in the left seat. There is one part where you're climbing where the rides drops away and you can see a long way down on the right. The view is gorgeous - my crew fights for the right seat. But it is unnerving if you don't like heights.

:thanks: Thank you for this tip! I have looked & looked at the videos & pics from this ride & wondered about that part. Guess we'll all be clamoring for the left seat! (yah, I know-wimps  )

We thought it was way too tame. The ride is a bit of a souped up Big Thunder Mountain. We were a bit disappointed and thought it needed a little bit more in the thrill and chill department.

Really, it is not very intense. It is much more along the lines of Big Thunder Mountain than RnR. The backwards part is rather short...the backwards "drop" is NOT all that steep, then you go up and to the left. But really, it is not extremely fast, even tho it may feel that way...an idea might be to turn yourself around slightly as you go backwards (in other words, try to look behind you), to give the feeling of going forwards rather than backwards.

BTW, the 3rd video link is great footage! The 2nd link, tho...well, I only watched the first 10 seconds and it brought up memories of some of those tour groups I saw last time I was there.... :crazy2:

Give it a try at least once. Worst thing that will happen is that you don't like it and don't want to do it again. But at least you can say you tried!

The backwards part takes you round and round and to the left. It isn't that steep but it does feel like it - and if I didn't know better, I could swear you go upside down. I've ridden it around 10 times and EVERY time after about 5 seconds of the backwards drop I thought I was gonna flip upside down, :rotfl:

It is an amazing ride though - worth riding even if you don't like the drop. But I do think your DD needs to be prepared for it!!

"Fast" is a relative term, I think. I can say for sure that it dosen't just drift back!!! That was the one part of the ride that I didn't care for-gave me an immediate headache which lingered for hours.

We didn't mind the going back part either. It seemed fast but the backwards part doesn't last that long. The bigger drop occurs when you are going forwards.

Or so I am told. WE loved TEST TRACK and kept saying that over and over and over as we waited our turn. Everest was GREAT! LETS GO AGAIN!!!!!

The backward part isn't any faster than the rest of the ride, but it does give the feeling of intense speed, so it's a relatively moot point. She'll feel as if it's very fast, and it IS rather intense. My family are all big coaster fans and we agree that portion of the ride is much more intense than you may expect (pleasantly so for us, but possibly not pleasant for everyone).

At the risk of sounding like a whimp, I think that part of the ride is definitely the 'worst' (best?). I can easily do The Hulk, Kraken, SheiKra....all the biggies; but the backward part on Everest catches me by surprise every time. Not in a bad way, just as a more intense sequence than the size of the ride might dictate. You might want to try Child Swap the first time around, so that you can either tell her you know she can do it or agree that it might need to wait a year. ;)
