I was reading another thread where someone said purchase direct and if you get the right contract you can get 2020 and 2021 points. How would this work?

For example- I recently spoke to a DVC guide for 150 points @ OKW with a June UY. He said I would get 2021 points with prorated dues but didn't mention 2020 points at all. Would I need to specifically ask how to get 2020 points also?

Thanks for any insight.

Youd have to get a use year ahead of the current month. So like if you got an august uy youd get 20 and 21 points. Youd pay prorated dues from date of purchase for 20.

Thank you! That make sense. He told me June was as far out as they could go. I'm going to ask again and tell them I would like an August UY.

you would need to request an UY that hasn’t passed yet.. so meaning aug, sept, oct and dec. Now it also sounds like they’re not banking points for ppl either so may need Dec to request that. But they should give you 2020 points since we’re still in that year for those later uys.

It’s based on getting current UY points. So, to get 2020 points right now, you have to purchase a UY that is still in its 2020 UY.

Those would be Aug, Sept, Oct and Dec. As soon as we hit August 1st, then that UY will no longer be eligible because it’s 2021 UY will have started.

Now, if Feb, March, April or June UY are better for your travel, which are in their 2021 already, then choosing something else just to get 2020 May not make sense in the long run.

A good UY is like free insurance for having to change or cancel a trip when you are still in the banking window or have a good deal of time to reschedule.

This is exactly how I look at it. Our non bankable months are months we wouldn’t normally travel anyhow.

October is our best UY but he told me I couldn't go that far out when I spoke to him on the phone. He did mention I was past the banking window for 2020 October points so maybe that's why

We have October, too. I wish September was in our bankable period, but we pick up May.

Usually you can bank points up to the new month when purchased direct. However with covid causing an influx of points into the system they are not extending banking for any reason. The only use uear that still has a banking window is December

Just my two cents. If you want the October use year I would ask for an exception and to have the 2020 points banked. This has been done at times before, just let them know you are willing to walk away from a $25,000 contract. Give it a shot, you may be get them to work some "magic".

Thank you all for the advice. Now I'm going to go search resales to make sure it wouldn't be better for us to go that route.

Hold your ground if you go direct and Oct UY is what you want. The only thing I will add is that you are buying a sold out resort, and sometimes, they can't sell every UY since they have to have points "in stock"...for lack of a better word...that include 2020 points.

If you were buying RIV, it would not be a problem...even if the guide tries to gear you to a UY you don't want. Plenty of people...including myself...have said we wanted a certain UY and if they couldn't sell now, then give me a call back when they could...or get special permission to do so. I have yet to read a guess where the UY a direct buyer wanted was denied!

Good luck!

I just added on to an existing October UY with RIV direct. Not sure how that matches to your scenario, but I thought I’d throw that out there if it helps.

I just bought OKW direct. We already have an AUG UY so that wasn't even a discussion. I had no problem getting 2020 points, and MS banked them for me no problem. However, he wouldn't stretch my payments over more than 15 days as others have said they have gotten up to 90. It's strange how each guide tells you different things...

We just bought points (first contract) a couple days ago and we were told by our guide that they were selling April and June UY. We wanted Oct and he asked for a reason why so he could request an exception. He got back in touch with us within an hour with Oct UY points. Stay insistant.

Got our points banked via chat in a few minutes. We were just a few days past the window when we bought though

Is that still the same since they changed the rules and can make any points any UY they want?

we bought direct RIV about 3 weeks ago and wanted an Aug or Sept UY (ended up with Aug). we (nicely) fought really hard with both our guide and the manager for the 2020 points. finally they told us that they could give us the points but we couldnt bank them. we were fine with that and figured at the very least we'd try to squeeze in a trip before july 31..well, after all that we called member services to book our trip and they offered to courtesy late bank the points for us
