Question about d3000

Hi, I'm just looking for some advice on an issue I am having with my Nikon D3000. I'm going to Disney in the Spring and am hopefully trying to resolve this problem before then!

I have had my Nikon for 2 or 3 years and last year it started to occasionally have an issue with focusing. When I tried hold the button down to focus, the camera would not focus on anything and just make a very subtle clicking sound instead. The issue has come and gone since but the problem has been happening more and more often recently. It will still take pictures when the focus is working and will also still take pictures all the time when I manually focus it. Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and has a solution? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

That would be my first question too. I had exactly the same with my D40 and when I switched the lens to manual focus it worked fine. I took it in and it was the autofocus motor on the lens - nothing wrong with the camera. If it's a kit lens (18-55), honestly it's not worth repairing. I sold it for spare parts and some nutter paid darn close to what a new one was at the time

Test it with another lens if you have one. The shutter won't release if it's set on AF and it cant lock focus.

If it's any help, mine had been making a slight 'grinding' noise and was starting to squeak whenever I tried to AF with it for about a week before and it eventually died completely.

It sounds to me more like a lens issue than a camera one.

I think everyone is on the right track here. This camera doesn't power the auto-focus for the lens, so it only works with lenses that have an AFS motor inside.

If you're having this problem using a lens that previously worked, it could be an issue with the motor inside the lens, rather than the camera. You could put on another lens that doesn't have an AFS motor and get the same result, leading you to believe that your camera is broken. That may not be the problem.
