Question about colorblocking

I love the look of pages that have been colorblocked, so I bought myself a colorblocking template. Now, I'm not sure exactly how to use it. Do you outline all the blocks on your page so you know where to put the pictures and stuff? Then use the template to crop the pictures and whatever else you are putting on the page? I keep thinking mine is going to turn out sloppy looking and just wasn't sure of the easiest way to use it. Thanks for any help.

I usually lay the template on a solid color cardstock as a base
then take the pictures that I want to use and figure out where they will all fit - and then when I know where I want them I crop those -
then slide another cardstock under in the 'blank spaces', pencil lines for cutting, embellish them and adhere them. embellishments for the other squares -

Hope that makes sense ;)

Thanks for the response. My dd and I made a page last night using the color blocking, and I really love the way it turned out. I will definitely be doing more pages. It gives such a clean look to the page although there are a lot of pictures on there.
