We are trying to save my sister some $$ on her son's class ring. I saw a few threads here where people were very satisfied with both cost and quality of the Walmart rings.

For those who have the Walmart ring -- how long have you had it? Just wondering how the material holds up over time.

Also, do you remember how long it took to receive it upon ordering?

Finally, right now my nephew (17 in December) is sizing as an 11. Do we buy a 1/2 or full size larger to allow for growth and his fingers expanding when it's warm here again?

THANKS!!!

My daughter got hers from Wal-Mart. Because she was homeschooled, she actually got hers in the 9th grade and wore it all four years of high school (I was pretty sure she wouldn't wear it anymore when she started high school - and she didn't, and I wanted her to get as much wear out of it as possible). Hers still looks brand new.

I don't remember how long hers took exactly, but I know it wasn't long.

In my daughter's case, I think we did go half a size, but I can't remember for sure.

Mine was bought in 1975. It was made of siladium (just the 70's version of whatever it's called today). Mine in in my jewelry box and still looks brand new. For reference, my husband's was made of gold, and mine looks much better than his does (also in the jewelry box). Because gold is softer, his shows more wear.

Thanks!! I might call them to find out their recommendation on the sizing...but I'm guessing we'll go up at least a half size.

I honestly like their rings better than those being offered by his school!

Ugh, what a waste of money. My class ring was worn for about 6 months and has been in a jewelry box now for 25 years. With gold prices now, I bet I could get more than I paid for it though!

I bought my class ring from Walmart about 12 years ago. It is white gold and still looks brand new (and I am very rough on jewelry). Granted, I don't wear it a lot now, but I did wear it all the time back in high school and for a little afterwards. We ordered mine at a Walmart store and I think it may have taken about 3-6 weeks, if I'm remembering correctly.

We bought our daughter's class ring for her 16th birthday and she wears it all the time and it's the same quality as the Balfour ring that I got in high school or maybe even better! She's an active girl and nothing has happened to it. It did take a little bit of time for delivery but I believe ordering through the school or Balfour takes just as much time. It seems to me it took about 6 weeks. She had everything put on it including her name and we had her initials engraved on the inside of the ring. She's not into gold or silver so we ordered the cheaper ring and only had a little over $100 in it. I could be mistaken but I believe you can even take the ring to the store and have it sized up or down one size for free when you buy it through them. The only thing you don't get with WalMart rings is a free replacement if it is lost and Balfour does. HTH!! :goodvibes

An alternative suggestion to Walmart would be Signet Rings by Dexter.

First, Dexter doesn't do "class rings" per se, which is one reason I'm suggesting them: they do custom rings in a variety of metals and styles. They'll engrave any design that you like on them (they have a photo of a 3D Spiderman graphic a customer ordered on a titanium ring, in fact), so you could have a ring made with the school mascot or a symbol more personally meaningful to the youth in question.

Second, they're not necessarily cheaper than Walmart's class rings, but you can easily get a nice custom ring for less than some of the options on the Walmart site. More to the point, you might get a ring that's a bit more timeless and won't end up in a drawer in the future.

Third, I don't know how often this happens, but without a stone set in the ring (if you get a straight engraved ring, I mean), there's no way a stone can pop out and get lost.

We're planning on having some family rings made up for an upcoming anniversary and will be working through Dexter. That is how I'm familiar with them. Good luck on your hunt!

I find it interesting that kids still want class rings.

I didn't get one. My DH did, and has no idea what happened to his...never wore after high school.

My DS (HS junior) could buy one through Jostens at his school this week, but has no interest whatsoever.
