Question about Characters strolling the park

what is the proper thing to do - can you ask them to stop for a picture/autograph or is that only for the actual character greeting spots/lines?

I noticed several characters walking around DL (Alice, Mad Hatter, Cruela DeVille) but didn't want to be "one of those folks" if stopping them was a no-no. So what is the "etiquette" on this?

The three of them were with the Band at the entrance at 10AM and I saw Alice and the MH again later by the Tea Cups.

I don't really remember seeing this at WDW -actually we saw Stitch but he was with a CM, I guess b/c he's not a face character.

You can always ask. If they are on their way out, they'll let you know. Sometimes they'll lead you to a spot where they want to stand, if they are walking.

We would just say "Hi Mickey" (etc)
The characters were pretty good at communicating what they were doing, they would just wave & keep going on their way or stop & say Hi back, or lead us to where they were going
