Question about burning a DVD

I though that it would be a good idea to put our home movies on top DVD. I borrowed my sister's DVD burner and hooked our camera to it. For the last several days, I have patiently burned each movie to DVD. I played the first one back to make sure that it worked. It appeared to be fine. Now, I'm ready to watch each of them so that I can label them.

The problem is, they only play if I use my sister's DVD player/burner. I tried playing them on our older DVD/VHS combo first. No luck. I went to the basement and tried them on our surround sound DVD player. Again no luck. My sister's had the burner/player for several years now if that matters.

:headache:

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

You have to finalize the DVD on the burner before you can play it on a standard DVD player. It will be an option somewhere in the menu of the burner, exactly where depends on the player.

If you have an older dvd player some if not most will play either N- or N+. There are some newer ones that will play both. Start with that and see what you find out.

I know that I didn't do that. Does that mean that all of the DVDs that I've burned are no good? They will play on the machine that I burned them on but not on any other one that I've tried.

The burner/player that I used is -R and that's what I used.

It isn't that they are no good, you just have to put them back into the burner and finalize them.

A non-finalized disc will play on a burner but not on a read-only player. If you have a computer with a burner you might be able to finalize them in there instead of your sister's burner. I can't guarantee that though, I have always finalized the discs on the same computer or appliance I have burned them on.

Thanks. I still have her burner here so I'm going to see if I can figure it out. Wish me luck!;)

If not, I'll give my BIL a call when he gets home from work.

Thanks SO much for your help. I found the finalize feature on the menu. So far, I'd done 3 (and they play!).

Only 16 more to go!

Thanks again. I never would have figured it out and I'm not sure that my BIL would have either since he only plays them in that machine.

You're welcome. I'm glad I could help.
