Warning...spoiler below!

If you've seen this movie, I have a question...

I saw it last night and thought it was great. One question - did Jack get killed by his wife's dad's people? I was very confused about how he really died. I was thinking that maybe his wife found out about that other guy, and she arranged to have him killed?

Any thoughts?

We don't know what happened. All we DO know is that Lureen is lying through her teeth in the phone conversation with Ennis; Anne Hathaway's performance makes this very clear.

In the short story, however, Ennis is more certain that "the tire iron" was responsible.

Thanks! I'll check out that link.

Yes, I thought the movie was very well made. It left me feeling frustrated and sad, though. As a straight person, I can see how easily I take it for granted that I can love who I love. The scenery was breathtaking and made me want to visit Wyoming.

This is seeming to be a debatable point in the movie. Some people(me included) felt it was Lureen lying to Ennis about what occured. I have spoken with and read that some people believe that the accident was real and it was Ennis' imagination taking shape as to what he thought really occured. Upon second viewing I am sort of up in the air. The "flashback comes aftera long shot of lureen and then a shot of Ennis and then the "flashback". It crossed my mind that it was the father in law's doing but, like many things in life, we will never know.

I got the impression of "lying through her teeth" also as the camera closed in on her mouth as she is telling the story of his death.

You're right except that the father-in-law probably had nothing to do with it (admittedly, this is clearer in the short story).

I liked how Hathaway let out this parched whimper when Ennis told her that Brokeback Mountain was where he and Jack used to fish; she finally put two and two together, and it devastated her.

I wasn't sure of the same thing...I thought that she had him killed when she found out he was going to move with the neighbor ranch hand back up by his parents house - but after reading this thread I am not so sure...

I think it is pretty much for the viewer to determine. However I think that people might have found out about him and the other guy at the cabin and had something done to him. I think that her finding out that Borkeback was thier place made it even more real to her.

It is pretty clear in the short story that the FIL had nothing to do with it. The tire iron was how the gay man was killed that Ennis saw as a child. My take is that it really wasn't saying that Jack died of a beating with a tire iron but that he was killed for the same reasons and Ennis equated the use of a tire iron to symbolize this in his mind.
